Has been extensively reported. http://blogs.cars.com/kickingtires/2...e-911-gt3.html

There is a fix for the IMS bearing issue. I would get it done, if it was mine. As I understand it, the fix simply allows the bearing to be properly lubricated and that solves the potential issue. Nice car, why take a chance?

The new new GT3s have all been recalled due to their engines going up in smoke. Add in the IMS problem they had for YEARS, and one wonders about Porsche engineering--and concern for their customers, as they denied the IMS problem on 911s, Boxsters and Caymen for years. Finally settled a huge class action suit.
As I said, I have always like Porsches, 911s at least, but they are overpriced for what you get, imo, and the cost of even the smallest option is a joke. But, I'm a car guy and would never knock the choice of another car guy.

We also talked about the ceramic IM shaft bearings, which seems to be the best choice and was installed in a Boxter S I was looking at. He mentioned that they should still be checked when you do the inevitable main seal service.
All in all I left him thinking that modern Porsche ownership is not for the faint-hearted or financially insecure! They are great to drive though!
I do congratulate the OP and wish him lots of fun hours driving his new baby.

In a few years, if I see the right 911S for sale I might consider an adoption. I would not be letting go of my '13 GS. I adore it too much to consider parting ways with it.

My warranty runs until 70k miles (the car has 22k now), so I will watch for any signs of impending bearing failure, and have it replaced if and when necessary.

As I understand it, the earlier cars (up to and including 2005 model year) have a bearing that can be replaced with the engine in the car. Starting with 2006 MY, the bearings were "updated" to a larger, more robust design...BUT...can not be replaced with the engine in the car. In fact the engine case must be split (disassembled) to replace the bearing. All in all, not a great design..

Warranty is good tho. Maybe you won't even keep it that long anyway.

Those numbers are right on the mark with what they are saying over on the porsche forum. Just to let know I've had my 08 for about 3 1/2 years and only had to replace front brakes and water pump($225at 55k miles). The car is pretty easy to work on. Easiest car I have ever had to do an oil change. If you are not a D.I.Y be prepared.

Glad you've had good luck with the '08. I hope to keep the '06 for a long time, but I've said that many times!!!!
