The first Corvettes although revolutionary were quite poor in construction quality as I remember.

Never heard the term, however the thread takes a nice trip down memory lane. Cheapest gas I remember was a Hess station selling at $.27 a gal. I had to force $2.50 to fill the tank in my '71 super bug VW. I missed the muscle cars in the late 60's was too young to afford one at the time. In '74 I bought a GTO , 350 shaker hood scoop (Firebird style). Nice car purchased new for $3600. A week after purchase the gas crunch hit and at 8 mpg could not get enough gas to drive it. Been recently blessed with my first grandchild and my immediate plan is to turn over the title to my C6 when she is ready.

I do remember my dad paying $.19/Gal. for regular gas for his 1949 Chevy that had a 216 ci. inline 6 cyl. stove bolt as his mechanic called the motor when changing the oil.
I can not say that I ever heard of the Corvette being called a plastic pig.

Anyone here remember ...

If you had an aftermarket high performance camshaft in your engine ... It was either a FULL RACE or a THREE QUARTER RACE cam.

Yup!

Luckily the Chevy guys had a good selection of small-block street cams right at the local dealer.

Not sure what era the "plastic pig" monicker applies to but I don't remember hearing it, and I've been around since the C1. My memory from back in the '60's is limited to that what a kid would know, like gluing together plastic models of 427 coupes and a Mako Shark, and GM promoting "Astro Ventilation" as a big deal. From the '70's on there's not much about cars that I wouldn't have heard or read about. But, truth is, I'm old enough now to forget things, as much as remember them.

Not sure what year my dad's truck was (pre 70) but I learned in a long bed Chevy V8, three on the tree with a full cab-over camper. Took my driving test in a full size Chevy Cargo Van with three on the tree. The tester at the DMV looked at the van and asked "you're taking your test in that?" After I replied to the affirmative, he hesitated a moment then pointed down the street to an open parking spot and said "Go parallel park in that space down there." Then he didn't get in, he walked down to the parking space. After I successfully parked it, looking much relieved, he finally got in.

Never hear the term plastic pig, but it brings to my mind a friends 1980. But I suppose that is as much about his wife who drove it most of the time than the car.
