Default Who has gone froma wide body to a narrow body?

A couple of months ago, I traded my 2013 GS in. In the last few weeks I was missing having a Vette and found a beautiful 2008 CRM Vert that I loved. It's not a GS, nor is it a Z51 but it is a 3LT with NPP and HUD. I am totally in love with it. I am no longer concerned about tires, it rides like a dream and I know I am going to take crap for this, but it seems faster than the GS. Maybe it's gearing or I just spent too much time in my Sonata. I am not hating on the GS because I loved my 13 and that body style too but I am very happy with a narrow body now. Maybe for more practical reasons.

Would not be surprised that it is a little faster. It weights less then your GS and they both have the LS3. Also did you have the NPP on the GS. if not, there is an additional 6HP.

There are a lot of good things about the base narrow body. It is a great looking design, tires are cheaper and more varied. Both are good looking, great driving cars. I am happy with my 07, it has been a great car. 150,000 miles of smiles and I am happier now than the day I bought it.

I wouldn't be surprised if after a period of driving something else, the 'new' vette felt faster than you remember, but the GM specs say that the GS is just a little faster than the base (0-60 is stated in GM materials as 3.95 sec for the GS vs. 4.2 for the base).

If you enjoy it, thats all that matters -- its still a Vette!

(Now batten down the hatches for the rush of GS-haters who insist that the GS is slower! lol)

With the same engine, it can only be faster if the gearing is different in the trans or the differential. I believe Z51 cars, which the GS is, have different ratios.
I accept what you say above. I am simply so thrilled to be back in a Vette that I think it feels faster.

Unless you race it, how it feels and looks to you is all that matters!

Also, the Vette is traction-limited in ALL its models. The larger rear tires on the GS probably contribute as well to its slightly faster time. Bolt on a stickier set of tires to a base model, and it will probably make up a lot of that advantage.

Enjoy, and don't forget to post up some pics of the new addition!

The GS is about 100 lbs heavier than the base model. It's faster than the base on a winding road course, but in straight line, the base is quicker. I've beat a couple GS's on the street with my 2013 base, but only by a fender.

The speed has to be approximately the same, if it weights more its marginal and the wider tires and lower center of gravity makes up for it. Honestly, its a drivers race at this point....I had a 2008 and now the Grandsport. Loved them both and each had its own appeal, no reason to hate or think one is better than the other.
Were LS3 brothers....

The base is not faster than the GS, according to GM. 100 lbs heavier perhaps, but the GS has better traction and transmission gearing than the base model -- that apparently more than makes up for the 100lb gain from the GS's larger sway bars, brakes and tires, making the GS faster, both in the corners and in a straight line.

From the Chevrolet 2012 Corvette brochure:

Never realized base is faster, but it makes sense. I still love the look of the GS.

Went from the base to the GS due to the w/b look. That Said, I think the base model is excellent. Can't go wrong with either model.

The Base Coupe is Quicker and Faster than the GS in a straight line.

I like them both. But I like the base front with the wide body rear look the best. One day....

As for which is faster. i could not care less

Enjoy the one you have its a vette. And a lot of fun regardless.

No, the track records prove the Base is faster, no it's not, yes it is, is not, is too, is not, is too, is not, is too, is not, is...

Congrats on the new car. Kindly post up some photos when you can.

Seems to us the difference between the narrow and wide body is purely ascetic; and even that is pretty subtle especially to the uninitiated.

We trudge on.

Interesting topic- I have wondered this myself. I think mostly you would miss the better brakes and the pedal feel you get from the 6 piston calipers. The newer models are nicely refined and usually shift super smooth.

From just a speed perspective, perhaps the wider tire GS can get out of the hole well enough to post faster acceleration times, but I think what the idea is really about is the 100 lb lighter base body in addition to the lighter wheels and tires can offer a rolling acceleration advantage that can be felt on the road- also the Z51 coupe has the same gearing as the GS.

put really good tires on a base coupe (don't worry, you can afford it now) and throw it around- They are still pretty fun cars.
