I loved that car, it was the first car I ever took out a loan to buy. That was my reward to myself when I got my first promotion at work. Believe it or not, I drove that every day on my 60 mi roundtrip to work for a few years. I came out after one 3-11 shift in the early spring to find out that it had snowed, I left the top down.
I wound up doing a full resto on it only to have Hurricane Sandy destroy it. I sold what was left to a guy in CA, hopefully he was able to bring it back to life.

'69 Hemi Road Runner....................... bought used in '73..............
kept it for a long while, then sold it as life's events unfolded..............

photo taken by old girlfriend and had it "digitalized" by my daughter as a Christmas gift to me a few years ago...........

was a Mopar fan.................

first Vette for me was an '84 bought in early '90's with high miles............... complete rebuild / repair / re-power over the winter in my garage in '92................

removed the backfire injection system and installed a built SBC with about 400 horses and a Holley carb and HEI distributor..................

sold that one and a few other "toys" in mid '90's as life changing events made me change priorities at that time................

now, I just have Hammy's and my baser 427 to keep me entertained..............

Backfire injection system.......
You saying you were not impressed with all that power?

For some reason I can't post any pics. Press the image button but nothing ever comes up anymore.

Had a 69 Vette in 78.
73 Grand Prix SJ in 76.
69 Camaro SS in 79.
84 Toyota Supra in 87.
92 Dodge Stealth bought from a guy upgrading to the new NSX.

Let's not forget my 51 IH corn burner sitting in the 3rd garage bay.

Speaking of pickups......how about the 55 Cheby we used to own...... friend of mine had built it and then was going thru the big D.....and I don't mean Dallas..... so he sold it to me for reasonable money with the idea that he would buy it back when he could.......which never happened......

This is the truck that the infamous front porch drive by drag race happened in....... the truck had a 360 hp Corvette engine in it with Duntov 30-30 cam and camelback heads all ported and polished and a large Holley set up on an Edelbrock manifold...... 3.73 gearing..... sumbitch would get out and go........

So me and the girls who were very young at the time......one was in a car seat still.....would go uptown cruising.....they loved that old truck..... so we were coming home one late summers eve it was still light out and we were just cruising......... up behind us all of a sudden riding our *** was a black screaming chicken Firebird.....with the shaker hood scoop.....he was trying to get around us and pulling right up on our bumper and just being an asshat...... it was pissing me off so as we were about a half mile from our place which is out on the edge of town on a paved road......its paved because there is a catholic cemetery at the end of it.....no one should have to drive on gravel for their last ride right? damn right......

So Firechicken saw an opportunity and swung out and punched it......now a normal Father would have made this a learning moment for his young daughters.....now kids that is not the way to drive a car........don't ever date anyone in a black fire chicken.....stuff like that .....

I am not that guy.......I canned it...... the old truck took off like a bull out of the shute rear end grabbing for traction and fishtailing a bit trying to pull even as we headed down the road......it was clear ahead and everyone was buckled up, so that you don't think I was totally devoid of fatherly instincts.....

The oldest girl was ....faster Daddy go faster and the little one was going da da da as she pounded the little padded car seat thing....... come to find out da da da means kick his *** Daddy....... who knew......

So here we are with both vehicles in full song as we approach our house and fly by it on down to the cemetery........ as I'm flying by I caught a glimpse of my wife and some other women standing on our front porch staring at this noise spectacle going by out on the road.....It was then I saw my sordid past flash in front of my eyes.......but the blood was up and the kids were screaming...go daddy go....... well of course we beat the fire chicken easily and got turned around and there was laughter and high excitement in the the cab of the old pickup....... I stopped and checked under the hood to make sure all was good and to stall for time........because I did not want to confront our churches Sisters of Prayer and their weekly meeting......... soon the adrenalin was wearing off and it was replaced with a sense of dread..............

I did not recognize the woman who was standing at the back door and ushering us all in as she went to plug in the Little Mermaid into the VCR for the still excited kids, as the same person who came down that aisle in her pristine white gown on our wedding day.......a day when all things were still right in the world........ this woman was not happy.....very very not happy......I did what every man must do at that time.......I got a beer out of the fridge....and said....now that was a lot of fun....... I won't bore you with the rest mainly because I do not want to ever think about it again........ we changed churches not to long after that and the old pickup found a new home and I had a long dry spell to consider my outlook on life.....

it is still talked about around the campfires on the warm summer nights as the kids laugh and tell the story over and over....... each time we win by a bigger margin...... I just look down and kick a rock or two and avert my eyes from my wife's stare....... those were the days....

Good job H1. Gotta teach the important lessons early.

First time my mother experienced the 69 baser at full tilt was an equally thrilling experience with unexpected consequences. It was spring time in W Texas and the sun had come out. My Dad and brother were both out of town so I thought it would be nice to take mom out for a steak dinner. I spent the afternoon washing and waxing the 69 coupe and detailing the interior.

Got mom in and we headed off for dinner. Turned onto Ward st, a main road on the North side of town. 3 lanes each direction with a center turn lane that doubled as a drainage ditch. Well it had rained earlier that morning so water was flowing down the turn lane. Bet you can guess what happened......yep some redneck steered his pickup into the water to soak my car going the opposite way.

Without thinking I down shifted and spun her around (took a little effort to stop the spinning) and set off full tilt after that SOB. I guess it was mom's screaming that reminded me she was sitting next to me.

That was her first and last ride in the 69.
A year later I was trying to do a pre safety inspection check and asked mom to sit and press the brake so I could check the lights. She flatly refused to do so.

Huskerman, your story reminds me of one that I heard from an older guy with a midyear coupe a few years ago. We were talking about his old timeslips that he had displayed from when he raced the car when he was younger. When the kids came along he stopped and the car went into storage. Fast forward a few decades, he restores the car and is at a show at a local drag strip with his wife and grandson. At the end of the show the organizers wanted to parade the cars down the 1/4, and as he took his place in line he let the car in front of him get almost all the way down the track. When his wife asked him what was wrong, he replied "this car has never been down a track slowly, it is not going to start now". You know what happens next. At the top end of the track as he is slowing down his wife asks him in very colorful language if he had forgotten about his grandson. He was plastered against the back window like one of those suction cup stuffed animals.
