Default Wreck

I was driving 65 down the interstate Friday and something broke in the passenger rear causing the car to take a hard left. As I was spinning a semi hit and threw me into the catch fence in the medium. Any one hear of this?

I hope you're okay.
No clue what could have happened. Drivetrain issue? Brake rotor crack and jam things up?
Do you think it'll be fixable? I hope it works out for you.
Best wishes.

Please let us know what the cause is/was when you find out.

Like Joni I hope no one was injured. I haven't heard of this happening, but that doesn't say it hasn't. Sounds like something locked up in the back, but have no idea what. Do keep us updated on the cause.

Scary stuff. I wonder if a bad sensor (steering wheel position sensor, possibly) caused the active handling to lock up a rear brake. Not sure if that's possible or not. I guess you had no time to notice if there was any message on the DIC, can't blame you for just being glad to be able to walk away in one piece.

What a surprise that would be. Haven't ever heard of anything like that before. Glad you're all right.

Are you and any potential passenger alright?

First thing I'd ask is if you have had any recent work done on the car. If not I'd look at the diff, brake rotor, and suspension back there. Don't worry about the car, insurance will have your back but such a shame to lose a grand sport in the best color. Good luck and hope to see you back on the road soon.

That's terrible!! I'm glad nobody was hurt.
That one pic looks like the car rolled with the roof, fender top and windshield damage.

That's most likely abrasion from the catch fence cables in the median.

It's really scary to see that a practically new car can just break going down the highway. Glad he wasn't going faster, and that the semi just didn't run right over him.

Good to hear that everyone's OK.

There is supposed to be a black box that records the last 20 seconds of travel.
It may shed light on what braking parameters, speed and other items it monitors. If you haven't driven or started the car, GM can read the memory.
I actually saw this done by the Connecticut State Police during a fatal accident investigation several years ago.

Correct car rode the catch fence.

Did you get a active handling warning message at the sane time it occurred? A problem with the active handling system can cause the car to think that you are out of control and it will attempt to correct for a problem that isn't actually happening causing the car to suddenly veer with no warning and the anti lock brake system can make some pretty nasty scary sounds when it happens.

One of the recalls dealing with some C6's warned the following and there have been cases posted on this forum of a C6 just suddenly veering right or left with no warning:

: In rare cases, repeated movement of the steering column may cause a signal interruption within the column. If this occurs, the message, "service active handling system" will appear in the driver information center, and one or more of the brakes may apply, possibly causing the vehicle to pull to the right or left.

Defect Consequence:If the driver does not respond to the change in vehicle movement, a crash could occur."

It appears that the rear wheel is turned in pretty good. Will have to look at it when we can get it the air. No time to look at the DIC. Happened to quick.
