Security in embedded applications is for the most part amateur night. Most of these systems have no business being bridged to the internet.
It's frustrating to watch the automotive, medical, manufacturing, etc. industries run head-long into the same problems addressed in the general-purpose computing world 50 years ago.

I was going to call BS on the brake control, but then I read that it wasn't the brakes but the transmission they started sending commands to. That's a bit different.
Had about the same argument with someone who claimed that all OBD2 equipped cars could have their steering hijacked by them there evil hackers. Not kidding. I realize that EPAS equipped cars have the potential to be controlled remotely, but his argument was void of that and was otherwise just simply tinfoil-tastic.

I'm not seeing panic. I'm seeing a very overdue interest.
If this article helps some percentage of readers realize that most of the players in the rush toward the Internet Of Things have no idea what they're doing, it will be a good thing.
Regular old theft and vandalism is bad enough without exposing oneself unnecessarily to constant, automated attacks from literally everywhere in the world, which is what you sign up for when you bridge any network to the internet. Cybercrime worldwide is already somewhere in the $500 billion - $1 trillion range annually.

And people wonder why I completely removed the OnStar box and antenna from my Vette.
No, it wasn't the hacking or spying excuses, but simply because I don't want to drag around 2.5# of totally useless weight.

1. get all the "voluntary" people to do it.
2. Then start requiring if you have any tickets.
3. Require all to have them.
Luckily we are still in step one for now.... who knows when the push onto step two will be, but I can see it very possible in the future.

There will come a day when you won't be able to get insurance without your driving habits being monitored. Sadly that will also be the day it will no longer pay to have a performance car in the garage. Who the heck would buy a Corvette if you could never have any fun with it.
