The whole idea of a battery tender is that they will NOT destroy the battery by overcharging and breaking down the electrolyte. You will get NO fumes other than an extremely tiny amount of water vapor from a battery on a tender/maintainer.

I keep my hood closed with a car cover on the car all winter. Mine stays outside, but I've never had a problem with any kind of vapors.

+1 For closing the hood and covering the car all winter in the garage. Never had issues with either Vette

I'm a cheapskate so I bought (several) Schumacher maintainers at Walmart. They were $19.95, now I think $23. They always worked perfectly.
They also carry a B&D maintainer for under $20.

So what's the difference between the Deltran Plus Tender and the one at Costco?

Actually I have heard those Battery Tenders made by Schumacher are pretty good even though sold at Walmart.

Using a maintainer can easily double and possibly triple the life of a battery. The difference between the most expensive and least expensive is not significant. The smaller (lower the current), the better. It is a maintainer, not a charger, so how fast it can bring the battery up to full charge should be unimportant. I have a couple of Battery Tender Jr.s that have worked great even when left on an unused car for several years continuously.

I have been using CTEK's for years. My 07 will be 9 years old January 2nd and it still has the original battery in it. There has been no hint of its demise as of 10 days ago when I drove it. I have also used a Battery Butler in the past with great results. Hood is closed, car up on lift, there is plenty of air circulation with the hood down. FWIW.

*my results are not the typical tender users results. I am a professional, do not try this at home kids. Adult supervision is suggested...

What he said. I hook up to fuse box & ground & run the cord to the trickle charger under the car,
snaking it thru the gap next to the engine. After the engine fully cools
of course.

Same here. They seem to work fine. Did buy a cigarette lighter adapter however. Find that more convenient than raising the hood.

The Black and Decker is at Home Depot also...nice because it comes with all three connection adapters included. $22

Also at WalMart $18.99, just don't take the Vette to Walmart...you'll catch all kinds of hell on the forum.

The reason for the tender is to save your battery's life while your car sits there sleeping. The same goes for the batteries in your "older" cars.

older cars don't have the draw on the battery that the newer ones do, they can be on a tender without being hooked up. when we go to Arizona for a month i keep a tender on my DD while we're away also
