Default What can i expect about AT service

Sorry but newbie on this topic. What can i expect from the dealership when i take my car in for the scheduled Auto Trans service. I guess i'm wondering what they will do to the transmission. I'm not having any problems now, the car has 60,000 on it. But the dealer said it was way past time for it to be done. Any thoughts on this would really help. Thanks....

did you look in your manual for service intervals? I think an Auto A6 tranny is good for 100,000 miles but verify you exact car model,, and THEN!! ask the dealer to show you where is says to service it any earlier. What he means by "way past Due " is the money he would make off of your premature service is way past due -- it is his dollars he is worried about.. that is why they are called Stealerships.

Know how to tell if you have a good dealer -- ??? Look at the size of his house and Boat -- the bigger they are the better the Stealer he is.

Pretty sure no service is required until 100,000 miles. Check you manual and then go have a talk with the service manager.

You asked what you can expect. Well, from the typical dealership you can expect your trans to be left 2 quarts low on fluid, trans fluid residue on the steering wheel and your wallet much lighter than it should be.

Sure seems like most of you want nothing to do with the dealerships. I guess I'm lucky to have a decent one in my home town. I know dealerships can be expensive. That would be a good topic for discussion. Describe your worst experience at a dealership....

100,000 miles is the recommendation on my 07.
I wish I had done it earlier to tell the truth.

You should expect your fluid changed and full when you get it back.

To the people that like to bash the dealers. Who do you think fixes all the vehicles that no one else can or after someone else screws up your car. That being said there are entry level people at dealers that shouldn't be allowed to work on anything. There are less and less qualified people that want to do this for a living because its not easy. Ive been a master certified diesel technician for 32 years.

My 09 says trans fluid replacement at 50000 miles if driving in weather at 90 degrees or higher or other type high performance driving 100,000 normal driving.
No way I will take to any mechanic for anything, and I have warranty.

Will do trans fluid and filter myself. Good YouTube videos on how widely available.

The dealer will not give you wrong advice, especially if it puts his credibility at risk. If it is not the miles it could be the time that makes it due. Check your own manual and speak to the dealer for any clarification. He may be having a point and thinking that the dealer is wrong when actually he is right will do your car more harm than good.

I'm just concerned mainly because it is a 10 year old model. That said the car is in great shape 7 out of a 10. But i don't know how the first driver drove the car. But by the looks of the inside of the car, and under the hood. He took good car of his baby. Iv'e owned 4 vettes and imho there are 2 types of vette owners. Ones that take very good care of their cars, and ones that drive em like they stole em.

You "feel" like it should be changed so, by all means, service the AT. In 10 years it may be that the trans fluid has been upgraded to a better product.
As far as the car being clean so it was well taken care of...nah, it just means it's clean. Maintenance is another issue.
BTW...I would change the diff fluid, also.

I see you have failed to grasp the "collective big picture". All dealerships are bad. All mom & pop & independent car repair operations are a pure as the driven snow...

Even the indie shops are not to be trusted..."stealer pops" for sure.
You need to do all work on the vehicle yourself...but don't
buy your parts at the stealership, fleabay, cramazon, ad nauseum.

I have had a long and very positive relationship with my local dealership, Schmitt Chevrolet in O'Fallon IL. They've bought into the GM commitment to model their customer relations after the Disney model. I'm taking Red in next week to have its AT serviced for the second time. With an E-Force supercharger and a Chuck/CoW tranny tune, I have this done every 48K miles.

I would stay out of the dealership and instead find a good local shop that people have confidence in.

Just like any thing else you have to pick wisely.. I do most of my own work but the things that I will not do on the newer cars are, coolant service, transmission service and the differential service..the newer cars have so many special service steps that must be followed that it makes it hard for these items to be done at home... I interviewed many dealers and toured their shops and talked to the tech's before deciding on a shop...the dealer I take my car only has one Corvette Tech, he is very good and we talk before and after the procedure.

I had my 05 A4 (I know I shouldn't say this) - flushed - a year and a half ago at 50K miles. With all the bad I've heard about flushing a trans I was nervous about it but was assured it would be fine. It has been. No problems and shifts fine.

I want to change my fluid. All of it. (mostly) I don't want to just pull the pan, change the filter and put back in about 6 or 7 quarts.

So there are machines out there designed to do just that. Some I've read about just use the internal pump and don't really "flush" it. Just replace as the old dumps out.

I've even seen machines that can then store what accumulated in the pan so the filter can be changed too.

The hard part. Finding a dealer/shop that has that equipment and the expertise to correctly finish the job by topping off the level per the "Corvette" procedure.

I haven't found either yet because I haven't really tried. But I need to call around and see.

Corvette Masters here in town only pulls the pan, changes the filter and adds the 6 or 7 quarts needed to replace what was in the pan.

Maybe PepBoys?

That would be one of my last choices......at least around my area. As well as the Firestones, etc...

Your next post after that may read something like "they put engine oil in my tranny and it doesn't move anymore".

If it were mine, I would dump it multiple times, refilling it each time with new fluid. Uses more fluid, but at least I would know it's fresh, clean fluid vs. who knows what they had run thru their flush machine prior to doing your car.
