Starting problem 2005 c6
Bought a 2005 with manual transmission. I have lights but will not start. Took battery out and it is good. Reinstalled it and the car started once. Tried to restart and I am back to where I was. I now have a check steering column lock message and no start. Bought the car from a friend so I now it's history.

Could be many things, but with the steering column lock message, that could be the problem See the attached threads on column lock issues.
Since you disconnected the battery, and reconnected it, then the car started, this is the exact symptoms in the threads.
They had to disconnect the negative post for 5 minutes, to get the car started.
The 2005 had a column lock issue that prevented the car from starting.
Here is a thread that explains it.

I would say LV2TOUR is correct. The column lock is bad and the car doesn't think it's in a position to start.

I just installed a "Column Lock Eliminater" in my 2005 2 weeks ago..I wasn't having any problem with the column lock yet , but I have heard enough stories that I wanted to fix it before it broke...Even if your not having column lock problems I suggest installing this eliminator as soon as you can....I installed mine in about 15 -20 minites, it's very easy.....Below is the link and the install video...WW

Completely baffled! Bought the car 2 weeks ago. Car was fine. Put it in the garage and now this. Have lights. Push start button and just hear a click in the dash, lights dim and nothing. Took the battery out and it tested fine. Put it back in and when I connected the positive the panic alarm went off. Stopped it with the fob. Started the car with no problem. Shut it off and thought maybe I should run it longer but back to square one! Took the fobs and had new batteries put in. Still nothing! I don't know now. The car has been pampered all its life! Only has 5600 miles. Bought it for this reason.

It is the column lock. Read the post above by LV2TOUR. I had the same problem with my 05 manual last year. Put the Eliminator in and have not had the problem since.

Yea,it's not the battery,it's the column lock issue. One of a few with the 05's. There was a TSB/RECALL or somnething on the column lock that took GM years and years to finally acknoweledge after people started complaining and getting in an accident or two. Always leave your manual 05 in reverse and hooked up to a battery tender overnight as well.To avoid any of the other battery/dbs issues known to 05's.

Installing the Eliminator is not difficult. Just take your time and follow the instructions. There is a video in a thread here.

Two different problems,
If the steering column lock is having problems, then he will get the service column lock message in the DIC, and the car will not even attempt to start.
Since he is getting the click at the starter, them most likely the problem is a positive loose wire on either the terminals of the starter solenoid, the starter is not tight to the bell housing and having ground problem there, or the ground wire bolt to the engine block just above the starter is not tight instead.
If it is the solenoid of the starter that has the problem, you can hit up a starter shop to have them replace just the solenoid on the starter for around $30, verses having to buy a whole new starter with solenoid for over $200 instead. The starter is just a Valeo unit, and although GM does not sell just the solenoid alone, many starter/alternator repair shops carry the needed Valeo solenoids instead.

I have checked the battery terminals at both ends. All were tight. At this point I have order the eliminator for the column so I'll put that in and keep my fingers crossed. Will post the results when I get the part.
