fatal Corvette test drive
I just saw on the news that at our local Carmax (Ontario, CA) a guy test driving a Corvette at a "high rate of speed" crashed into a tree. The Carmax salesman was killed in the accident. The driver is a 28 year old male who has been charged with vehicular manslaughter and is suspected of being under the influence.
What a nightmare ending for that poor salesman.

"In honor of jpee"
A real tragedy for his family, friends and co-workers. As one witness said, "That guy had no idea today would be his last day when he showed up to work today."
Let's be careful out there, guys and gals.

Prayers to his family.
In the 80's I was hired by a dealership to evaluate the car salesmen of other dealerships. The last one I went to was his Acura dealership. We went for the test drive and the salesman drove first to show me the features (still don't understand that choice). He took me down a twisty 25mph road and was driving too fast and while reading me for a reaction and he drove off a cliff. We ended up nose down, hanging from the seat belts and he looked at me and said "If you buy this car right now, I can keep my job." I had to respect him going for the close.

I saw the article on Yahoo and it said that the idiot that killed that poor guy in Ontario, CA was from Union City, CA. Unless there is another Union City in CA, that's a pretty long way from home for a test drive. Union City is in the East Bay Area, about 400 miles north of Ontario, which is in the L.A. metropolitan area. The guy looked like a certifiable gangster thug, down to the tear drop tattooed on his right cheek. Can't the agency just say no to a test drive request or would that be breaking some sort of Federal discrimination law?

My personal thoughts on the matter.... drivers licensing should be 'graduated'. That is, a 'C' class license- - - new drivers and limited to a specific HP max or HP to weight ratio... if after, say 5 years of no serious, at fault accidents; allow a graduation to Class B license with more HP or lower HP to Weight ratio allowed. Anything below 10 lbs / HP or any HP rated vehicle over 400 HP - require 5 years of no fault Class B experience AND passing a performance driving program. Now the HP limits, time limits and ratios quoted above are for illustrative and discussion purposes only - - - but allowing a 28 year old, who has only driven front wheel drive Toyotas all of his (or her) driving career, to get behind the wheel of a 400+ HP, Rear Wheel Drive vehicle on public roads is irresponsible!----- in my humble opinion.
Condolences to the family and friends of the car salesperson killed by this irresponsible individual.

There is already legislation in place to deter driving while under the influence. CarMax has the right to refuse anyone to test drive a car. Additional legislation will not and would not have saved this salesman's life. His acumen for common sense could have done that, but sadly he refused to exercise it.
RIP.
