Default LED bulbs for tail lights? Pros and cons please

Hi. thanks everyone for the great answers regarding buying a car cover. I think I have now decided not to get one based on members' experience and advice. Here's a new question.

What about LED replacement bulbs for the tail lights? Is their 'instant on' a good thing? Are they as bright? What color bulb is best, red or clear/white?

Again,I appreciate your feedback.

I had rear LEDs on my 96 Vette. They were brighter. They worked great. They were a full tailight not just a line or circle like many I have seen for the C6.

Most people here go with "eagle eyes" here, which is a full set of replacement tail lights.

I bought some sweeplites for mine. I did have to wire in the resistors but it turned out to be a nice mod.

I have the eagle eye tail lights on my C6. They are much BRIGHTER than oem! I also get lots of complements on them as well.

This is the problem in my opinion. LEDs, with the required resistor, don't use any less power unfortunately. If they are truly brighter or can offer a cool design then maybe, but adding that giant, heat-producing resistor just so the BCM thinks the bulb isn't burnt out seems counter productive to me. Just my opinion. Good luck!

Default LED bulbs in the OEM taillight housings

https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...resisters.html

See in particular post #6 and following. The normal taillights do NOT need resistors, and run at a much reduced amperage. Only the turn signal and brake light functions need the resistors, and they are only on for brief periods of time.

I have been running this set-up since January of 2008 with zero issues.

I can't offer any info on brightnes compared to stock bulbs, but for the best light output always match the color of the bulb with the color of the lense.

To prevent hyper flashing a different flasher or resistors will need to be added. Resistors work. However make sure they are mounted in an area where they won't touch anything. They do get hot.

Love the Black Onyx. Lights I got...at least twice as bright as stock and comes wired for sequential turn signals and they even make your 3rd brake light flash a couple times when brake is applied...Plug and play!!...The clear line of LEDs are your nighttime running and parking lights..(looks cool)...when brake is applied the whole blackout area lights up....Even had police go out of their way to get behind me to check them for brightness.....No problem!

And since there is no flasher (the BCM computer does all the flashing) that leaves... But you are correct. They do get hot. LEDs pull less current so the BCM thinks the bulb is burnt out and tells you that by making things flash much faster than normal. To fool the BCM you have to pull about the same amount of current as the original incandescent bulb and all that energy has to be dumped somewhere. Some aftermarket suppliers include the resister in the new LED while others require an external resistor.

I notice them, but have no itch to buy any. A lot of money and trouble for nothing, but that's what car people do. I've just managed to waste money in another way on my car.

It's always good to learn something new about my Vette. Now I know there is no flasher. Thanks.

The sweeplites have been in for about a year. I like it better then the regular sequential tail lights. I also added switchback LEDs (white/amber) to the front turn signals and side markers. No issues with the resistors or heat with how they are mounted.
