The Dangers to the Keyless Ignition
I just watched this video http://www.nbcnews.com/nightly-news/...s-653813827740 and didn't realize that my keyless ignition was a hazard.
The subject in the video was a woman who drove herself and child home and parked in their attached garage. She was on a phone call and was distracted and forgot to shut the car down via the keyless ignition. They went into their house, did their normal activities and went to bed for the night. Yep, the car was still running. During the night, the kid wakes up screaming with a carbon monoxide induced headache and woke up the mom, who was also feeling bad. She went to the garage to drive to the hospital, and lo and behold, she found the car was still running. Almost killed them.
The journalist said that he had done the same thing and reported several deaths due to people forgetting to turn their car off with the keyless ignition.
Apparently the auto companies think this is a problem and are looking into a solution. I guess the stupid and distracted public does indeed need some help. Like maybe holding people accountable for their actions and criminally charge them for injuring or killing someone. I wonder if the same people that forgot to turn their car off with their keyless ignition would be smart and attentive enough to use a keyed ignition.

These are the same type of people who require a "Hot" warning on a cup of coffee.
This tells me this idiot woman was driving while talking on the phone (the equivalent of drunk driving), and nearly killed herself and her kid because she was just as distracted after stopping the car as she would have been while driving.

Wonder if anyone has done an investigation/study on how many people have left their (key required) cars running do to distractions (or stupidity)? Can't recount the the number of articles I've read over the years where someone has forgot & left their car running and a child (left unattended) has put it in gear, someone has stolen it, etc. IMO Accidents happen and/or 'you can't fix stupid'... it doesn't mean we shouldn't be afforded the pleasures/conveniences of modern technology.

I always shut down the car before I exit it. The only safety thing I think they could (not should) implement is to shut it off if the drivers door opens. They don't force a shutdown if no fob is detected because of times of radio interference and they don't want the car to shut down while you are driving.
I do have Carbon Monoxide detectors on every floor of the house though. (it is a Law here in NYS that you must have them)
You can get them as duel purpose with smoke also or stand alone.

This has nothing to do with keyless ignition. Why does everyone have to blame something or someone else when they do something stupid. The blames lies 100% with the driver for making a mistake

And I might add that they evidently didn't have carbon monoxide detectors in their house......

I woke up with a headache so I just ran out to my garage to see if I left my car running. I hadn't so it must have been that last glass of wine.
If I were the subject of that report, the first thing I would be doing is figuring out how exhaust gas in the garage is getting into the house. With modern building codes, that shouldn't happen. If the house is older then the real solution is to create a seal between garage and house.
I don't blame the car either. Operation of a vehicle comes with some responsibility that car makers simply can't (or shouldn't) override.

I saw this on the news too.
Not only have we become a nation of cowards and wimps, we are a nation of idiots too. We cannot survive without the nanny state taking care of us.
Of course, the above stupidity will motivate Washington to enact more mandates on the auto companies, creating more "work" for government bureaucrats, and raising the price of all cars.
Wah wah, do we have a 100% risk-free life yet?

We either have to engineer to the shallow end of the gene pool or let Darwin's Law prevail. Guess which way the government and auto industry are going to go...........

Forgot my other thought--this ranks right up with getting stuck in your Corvette with a dead battery because you're too dumb to read the owner's manual.

Well, she was on the phone when she parked her car. Every morning I see people driving down the road while talking on the phone, and I'm sure there are many more than you can't tell because of Bluetooth. And ... hopefully not to sound sexist ... most of the ones I see are women. I don't understand why people can't stay off the phone in the time it takes them to drive to work. Sure, there are emergency situations when it might be necessary (hence you can't block phone calls when in the car), but common sense should prevail. It's the equivalent of half the drivers being drunk. And no, it's not the same as driving and eating, drinking coffee, or smoking. Those are mindless tasks. The phone call requires your attention.

I also saw the report and said the same thing as most everyone else. To many people are so distracted that they have lost all common sense. At least she was not that distracted and forgot her kid in the car. I mean she knew to open the garage door pull the car in, and get her kid out of the car but never thought to turn the car off.

I was always a little concerned that I may make the same mistake. So I went out and installed a cam, headers, and a supercharger. Now there is absolutely no way to not realize the car is running.
