my car came with the radar detector mount in the windshield, but I have not installed a radar detector. I believe it worked very well in that location.

As for which device; I have read that the escort passport and valentine one are the most popular.

Within one week of taking my brand new 10' GS home I bought an Escort 9500ix. Has saved me 100's of times over the years. With GPS no more false signals, red light cameras notification really helps on road trips.

I bought a Valentine V1 when I bought my 'Vette. Really don't need it much because I don't like tickets. Be aware that they will not pick up "instant on" radar until they are turned on so if it goes off, you've already been had. The only thing I can see they are good for is if you are following someone that is going crazy fast and then stay behind them by a mile.

If you need ultimate range and sensitivity (highway driving), don't mind false alerts from Blind spot monitoring and store fronts, and need 100% stealth (VA, DC, most of Canada) then get a Redline.
I have mine mounted just off the dash by about an inch, just to the right of the light sensor. Pic shows my old RD, but the placement is the same.

I like my Beltronics ( made by escort) because it has GPS and you can "Mark" false alarms caused mostly by those automatic doors at stores. And it tells you when your approaching a red light with a camara(which I keep off). I don't speed a lot.. But most cops ride around with radar on all the time so it's good to know when ones near.
I got a ticket in 2012 on a service road which was stupid, like 48 in a 40... I ordered my detector that day. No tickets since...

I am an Escort guy, bought my first in '82. I have one in each of my cars.
No speeding ticket when using the detector, I've had a couple when not.

Unless you're going to drive it like a Prius, absolutely get one, and learn how it works best. My V1 has saved me thou$and$ over the years on my motorcycles and in my cars. I just returned from a nine state run and it saved me six times! No foolin! The K band is driving me crazy though. County cops use it all over the north and southwest. Hiway cops almost exclusively use Ka band. Problem is, to keep alert of the county cops, I have to listen to most of the semi trucks coming at me, ALL UPS semis, and some big (ocean going) type RVs. WTH? Anyway, YES get one. In just say, one and a half tickets, it would have paid for it self WITHOUT any insurance increase or loss of license.

This was the case just last week for me , on the highway, radar starts to beep stop beep again , stop . I figured I better slow down and as I rounded a bend my unit goes full scream ...and there was the cop pulled back in the median strip , if I did not have my escorts....
My rule of thumb , if it's beeping .... slow down

I drive with the Escort Max 360 and if I am going on longer trips or even the highway drive to work in the morning - I always use Waze as well (iphone and android have it).
If you have not used it I would suggest taking a look at it. People that have been driving through the area you are in can report cops and even traffic backups so I can take an alternate route to work and you can report a lot of other things (car on side of road, hazard in road, etc.)
The best part is Waze will show cops and how long ago someone posted the alert. Also, the cops aren't always using radar or if they use laser you are caught anyways - but waze lets me slow down before I get to the area the cop is in.
Between both the radar and Waze - they have both saved me countless times!

I bought a Valentine when I owned my 2009 C6, never installed it. Fast forward to now and I still don't have one in my 2013.
They may help but the best detector is the one in your head. Drive fast if you like ( I do ) but pick your places carefully.
After reading this thread I downloaded Waze and will give it go.
