Default Best way to stick on the OnStar Brick

I have a 2005 which has that stupid unsightly brick stuck to my windshield (I think it's an OnStar device) to the right of the rear view mirror and it recently started to fall off, likely due to being parked outside all day long at work. It does get pretty hot in the cabin even though I leave the windows open a bit.

Anyway, it appears to be held on with a thin film of clear adhesive and a blob or two of some other clear adhesive. I'm not sure which one is really failing but I don't know how the stock OEM setup was - just thin film (that failed before and was "fixed" with the blobs) or both film/blobs were from the factory.

Either way, I need to fix this and I was wondering if anyone had knowledge of or thoughts on the best way to reattach it and keep it stuck for a good long time. Maybe some marine adhesive of some sort. I'm guessing simple double stick tape is not resilient enough on a hot windshield.

I've had the car for 3 years and this is the first time it's fallen off for me. I'm sure those who have it and have had the windshield replaced had to get that stuck back on.

Thanks,

Kevin

If you go to the auto supply store or Amazon they have a rear view mirror glue/adhesive kit you can purchase. This will solve your problem.

I used this http://www.scotchbrand.com/3M/en_US/...4529207&rt=rud when mine fell off and it's held up well in the Florida heat for a few years now.

Rear view mirror glue will not work , I would buy the black 3M extreme double face tape , it says it will hold 30 pounds . I would also put a dab of silicone in the center (not on the tape) Just as an added measure

"Yes" is my answer to that. Mine's in a storage box somewhere. I just removed it since I don't use OnStar. There's a couple connections stuffed in the ceiling by the windshield that you can disconnect and remove the box, but still easily reconnect later if/when you sell it.

If you do subscribe to OnStar, then I wish you the best with adhesive - it will require something that has a high heat tolerance. Sorry, I don't have a suggestion for that.

BTW - I nearly blistered my finger when I was removing the residual glue after disconnecting the box. That black rectangle gets REALLY hot after being in the direct sun during a sunny-summer day.

I removed mine as part of my weight reduction program that included the box in the cubby, the cigar lighter and ashtray, door handles, chicklets, rear brake ducts, and swapping the front bumper flags for a decal.

The brick is not anywhere near as ugly as the antenna wart on '05's.

I could save a lot more weight than that if I went on a diet.

Lots of good info here. Thank you all very much.

I'm most intrigued by the "remove it" option which I had not considered since I knew you can't remove the box in the hatch area under the right cubby. I assumed the brick (it's the antenna?) had to stay also. But now I know it can be removed, that might be the better option.

Thanks for the adhesive suggestions too. Sounds like there are a couple options that are winners.

Thanks again,

Kevin

Properly cleaned surfaces and 3M VHB 5952 will hold it. Used it to hold the LED DRL load resistors inside the engine compartment on my '05 vert. As strong as the tape used to hold the emblems on the car, if is not the same PSA material.

Yes, you can remove the box in the RH hatch cubby. You just have to jumper the plug-on connector and you can do that with a paperclip.

I must have missed that one or neglected to read it after another post said it couldn't be removed. Though I thought someone said the box is tied into the system such that it couldn't be removed. Thus the paper clip probably. Guess that bypasses whatever issue exists after taking it out.

I'll look at that a bit more. Thanks.

There are other posts that show wire splices and bypasses, but simply completing the circuit can be done this way and it's easy to reverse in the future.

What box is this? My GS has the battery in the RH hatch cubby.

IIRC, M6 GS, Z06, and ZR1, all have the OnStar box either behind or under the passenger seat. I've never seen one, so take that for what it's worth.
