No transaxle. The rear uses Dexron and the trans uses Dextron. The trans and rear bolt together but each uses different oil. The manual trans have been using ATF for years.

It does take Dexron III. Do not use Dexron VI or Syncromesh. Dexron VI is backwards compatible in an automatic transmission but not in these, it will foam. When Dexron VI came out, they now sell "Manual Transmission and Transfer Case Fluid" part number: 88861800. You will need 4-5 qts. depending on if you have a base model or Grand Sport/Z06/ZR1 with all the coolers and such and how much you spill putting it in.
The rear differential takes Dexron LS 75W-90 gear oil part number: 88862624. That needs 2-3 qts. If you don't use the proper fluid or a proper equivalent here the clutches will chatter when you turn sharply.

Oh yes!!! You will find a label on the manual tranny housing warning DEXRON III only!! Tremec manuals have been using DEXRON III ATF fluids as factory fill for a very long time. DEXRON III as a spec is obsolete but you can still find plenty of quality aftermarket ATF fluids (like AMSOIL Torque Drive or Redline D4-ATF) still labeled for DEXRON III application. As others have warned, do not use a fluid that is labeled as DEXRON VI use as it is not backward compatible in TREMEC manuals with DEXRON III. DEXRON VI was formulated for autos only for fuel economy. The rear diff housing has a separate fluid sump and the correct fluid is DEXRON LS 75W90 gear oil which already has slip lock additive in it.

For the rear diff, I used the GM product from GM. For the manual trans, I used both Mobil1 and GM fluids.

As stated above, it is not a transaxle, it is a trans and an axle that just happen to be bolted together. They do not share one fluid as in a transaxle. The trans uses Dexron III ATF and the axle (rear end) uses Dexron LS which is a gear oil and is nothing like Dex III.

I've been in the racing business for years. Most teams use redline. I talked to my redline rep about why it's so good. his answers bored me and i think i fell asleep during his lecture. but we've been happy with it.
