Grand Sport Oil Change
Need help on oil change for 2011 GS. How do you know if you car has a dry oil sump or not? With a dry oil sump requires 10-1/2 qts w/out requires 6 qts. Does this sound correct?

To be more specific:
GS manual coupe = dry sump
GS manual convertible = not dry sump
GS auto (coupe or convertible) = no dry sump

The GS manual coupe is the one with the dry sump and the hand built motor. You will see the motor placard on the front passenger side of the motor sort of up under the motor cover. It has the name of the person who built the motor. The manual convertible does not have either or these, neither does the automatic transmissions .

Welcome to the forum.
It'd help in the future to get answers for questions, to fill out your profile with at least the State where you reside and some basic info about your car. That way people who respond can be more helpful and specific.

And just a thought...unscrewing the oil filter makes a mess. My next change I'm going to try poking a hole in the bottom of the filter to drain it before unscrewing...or perhaps taking it off inside a ziplock bag so that the overspill just drips into the bag and then the filter is in a plastic bag for easy disposal. Don't know which of these would be better, but I thought about this after my last change.

I've poked a hole with an awl to drain the filter for years. I put a screw in the hole when it slows to a drip to stop any more from coming out when I take the filter off.
I don't even like the mess by trying to catch the drain plug, so I let it fall into the pan and fish it out with a magnet later.
One more thing to short cut the cleanup process, is to cut the bottom out of a milk jug or pop bottle to use as a funnel for the refill. Then just throw it away when you're done.

Glad to hear that works. I'm going to give it a shot next oil change. In reality, that filter removal is really the only "messy" part of the job.

Pretty sure if your battery is under the hood, you definitely don't have a dry sump. The sump is where the battery was located, which was relocated to the hatch area.
But if you owned a GS coupe with a manual transmission, you would already know this.

GS Oil Change
Just a few more things to add to the great responses already posted for you.
Dry Sump cars will have the battery in the trunk.
If you are using an AC Delco filter get the black one with same part number noted however ending in "R". Also I understand the Mobile 1 filter will work since they handle more pressure.
If you are doing it yourself, I did find a post with great pictures. There are two drain plugs on dry sump models. Also the filter is hard to remove and a tool that fits filter would help.
I just had mine changed by a local mechanic. I pointed out the two drains and provided the torque specs. Had him install only 10 qts.
When I got home I checked the oil level "warm temp" as noted in owners manual. Then added approx. 1/3 of qt.
Hope this is helpful.
