Is dealership correct?
Hello again friends,
I was talking to the service advisor about getting the fuel pump replaced under the GM fix (fuel smell.) He noticed my car is part of the emissions recall. They need to add 2 catalytic convertors. I told him the car passes emissions in Texas and runs fine so I'd rather not do the recall. He said they can't service the car at all without doing the recall. He said this is a GM mandate. I told him it's not safety related, and I would sign a waiver. No deal, either do it or don't bring the car in! I guess I will let them add the cats, but I'm wondering if he is correct.
Thanks

GM is required to make the car 50-state compliant, so if they work on it, they have to do the recall fix despite the fact that it's not safety related. You can always have the cats gutted later on, and the recall fix will be on GM's records.

Normally the words "Correct" and "Dealership" don't belong in the same sentence but in this case they do.

What are you guys doing with this recall that have headers installed? There is no room to add a 2nd set of cats?

Can someone cite where they found the information that dealers are required to do recalls regardless of the owner's preference and can otherwise refuse to work on it? Whose car is it?
I was a service writer for several years and never came across this.
I'm guessing he's "requiring" it because it's easy money for the dealership and him.

I am a service manager at a Nissan dealership. If a customer declines getting a recall done, there is nothing we can do about it. The advisor gets paid on recalls and is probably trying to pressure you into getting them done.
I am sure the Dealer Principal and Fixed Ops Director would like to know about his service dept refusing to do other requested work.

When I took my 08 in for state inspection, the dealership mentioned that my car had a emission recall. I told the service advisor that I did not
want that performed. He asked me why,and I said I already have
two cats. and do not want a additional two. He said no problem.
If I remember that the letter I received from GM on the recall said it
was not mandatory to have done.

Thanks for the great replies! I think I am going to check with GM on this. I'm like cw313 "whose car is it anyway?" Having read the threads on this recall, I see some forum members report no noticeable changes while others say it effects the sound and power of the car negatively. A few say it ran better after the work. The good thing is the dealership is one of the largest Corvette sellers in the South West and they have a certified Vette tech who spends 98% of his time on them. I'll let y'all know how it turns out. Highest regards

If it's not broken, why fix it?

"In honor of jpee"
I'll add my two cents even if I'm not a former or current service mgr. To me a recall is a recall; it's not an elective (by the dealership) TSB. I doubt if a recall actually makes money for the dealership. It isn't a suggestion to do something. And in this case, it relates to, and for health and safety.
So far, a recall is not mandatory in the sense that someone comes and picks up your car whether you want them to, or not. And that's why some cars driving around are harmful, and potentially dangerous. In this case of adding and changing things for emission reasons, it's slightly different and not imminently dangerous. Maybe it just affects all of us from a breathing standpoint.
We all remember the days of professionals painting cars with no respirator, good face mask, goggles, etc.----as a matter of fact there are pics of people doing so right in the car plants. "Only" lifespan and quality of life were affected by that practice which reminds me of the effects on first-responders at Ground Zero.
Yes, I know the above sounds extreme. Don't worry tho; the day of mandatory recall is coming, however it might be implemented. ymmv

I have an 09. With the infinitesimal chance my car would ever see the back room of a dealership under my ownership; if I were somehow "forced" into the additional cats, they'd have a half life of about 15 minutes BC it would take me 30 minutes to get the car back home, up on the lift and gut them.
