Default Run Flat Tires

Is there any opinions out there as to replace the Run Flat tires with Non-Run Flats when it is time to replace them.
Any Ideas pro or con??

Opinions?!? Only about 40 billion!!

Run-flats or non run-flats is strictly a personal choice.

Run-flats: Peace of mind. Not worrying about being stranded waiting for a tow truck. "Somewhat" firmer ride.

Non run-flat: Softer, quieter ride, better traction. You should invest in a mini-compressor and fix-a-flat kit to carry in one of the rear cubby holes.

I've been running Nitto Invo non run flats for a couple of years. The ride is better with less noise than with run flat tires and less trammeling (following the ruts in the road).

I haven't had a flat in 30 years but have an air compressor and slime in case of an emergency.

Run flats are for security. If you have a flat in most cases you can drive the car back home or to a repair shop. What they will not do is provide security for a major sidewall puncture or major tread area damage. They are also known for being somewhat noisy and providing a little rougher ride than non-RF.There are hundreds of posts here on the subject, it all boils down to personal choice and the RF security you may find attractive.

Depending on where the puncture or damage is many shops will not repair the tire. RF tire manufactures recommend in most cases that the tire not be repaired. If the puncture is small like a nail shops may offer to repair the tire. If you get a tire replacement warranty that would be the way to go instead of repair. Warranties are really pretty inexpensive when looking at expensive Corvette RF tire replacement. Something to think about.

i went from run flats to Nitto Invo non-run flats. much quieter and smoother ride for sure. as others have said , a really GOOD compressor, that can get you a long ways down the road or home if necessary.

one of the best compressors that fits in one of my rear cubbies..

green slime from Wally world ( for emergency only, last resort) and a plug kit (which probably is a last resort also)

I choose to use runflats for obvious reasons. If you are away from how in an unsafe location these CAN get you to the nearest tire shop. Also, I believe the tires are a bit better for high speed driving in case of a blowout/hole etc. Look into the Firestone RFT, great tires.

If you use your car mostly as a local driver, non-runflats can be a reasonable choice.

If you do long road trips into the boonies like us, runflats can be priceless. We got a sidewall cut on a RF in the middle of nowhere, couldn't be reinflated or fixed, the nearest tire store was about 60 miles away at the other end of the Tail of the Dragon. No big problem with RF.

Grip and ride depend on the tire design but not the RF/NRF feature. Several years ago a local autocrosser switched from NRF to RF of the same design. He said the ride was identical but the handling was slightly better, he and his wife won mens and womens autocross champs for the region on the RF tires.

OTOH, NRF will be cheaper for the same tire design.

You do know that "slime" or any "fix-a-flat" solution will destroy your air pressure sensor?

Not only that, it will most likely destroy the rim. I had my $12,000 set of rims ruined by a can of the fix a flat. The chrome was ate up from he inside on one of the wheels. As soon as the tire place took the tire off they immediately told me that it looked like a can of fix a flat was used on the car and ruined the rim. Lesson learned, never again!

LOL duh. Just one, but it wasn't easy to replace a rim that was out of production in 26x10 size.

We use the Michelin Pilot Sport RFs on the red car and have been very satisfied with them. The rears are closing in on 25K and still have some life left. We prefer the RF's because we travel in the car and believe the RF's lessen our chances of being stranded in an unfamiliar place. Twice we have picked up a nail in the rears (first the left, then recently the right) and both times Discount Tire patched them. Will need rear tires next spring and plan to re-up the Michelins. Pricey but plenty good for our purposes.

We trudge on.

carry a plug kit and compressor regardless of what tires you have. There is no spare or jack in the car. Don't ruin a runflat due to a nail hole. And don't be stranded with a conventional tire.

Get a proper plug kit, don't use crap like Slime. And a $20 compressor (like the Slime one) at Walmart.
