Really, really loud rod knocking sound
So after two weeks of not driving my car, I start it and it sounds like a rod blew it is knocking so loud. I freaked and turned it off. Started it again and it stopped once warm. 2008 with 54,000 miles. I am in TN so lows are in the 30s average. Thoughts?

No, and it did stop after it warmed up and then I took it out driving for a bit. I am due for an oil change so I am taking it into the dealer tomorrow. I talked to them and they don't think it is anything but they want to keep it at least overnight and see if they can get the same noise. No lights or warnings on dash and oil pressure was good.

Mine is an '05. If I put the gas pedal to the floor, the motor turns over but does not start. You could do this If it sits for a while. This will pump the oil around and may lube the lifters before it starts.

Melting Slicks
I had an '83 Bronco that I bought new and it would do the same thing on a cold morning. Sounded for all the world like a rod knock, but it would go away once the car warmed up even a little bit. I kept waiting for the little 302 V8 to die, but it kept on rolling for 17 years and 171K miles while I owned it.

I have an old Caddy. Had a lifter stick on the motor after letting the car sit for too long. Put an additive in the oil designed to free it up and it worked, Once I was convinced the problem went away I changed the oil again and haven'thad a problen since. I start the car and run it more often now.

You probably won't want to do this but I had a 69 Charger with a 383, headers that I ran hard. It started that same knock when I was in the Air Force. I was broke all the time and could not afford a tear down. A guy in the engine shop with me at one time worked on an NHRA top fuel team (Jerry Ruth). He told me to add a can of STP because it was a collapsed lifter. Fixed it! Never had the problem again. Changed the oil every 3,000 miles because back then you did.

Sometimes a small piece of dirt can get stuck in the filler hole of a lifter, causing the lifter to not pump up immediately...It could be this, or like everyone has said , the lifter could be bleeding down after a period of time, and it takes a minite for it to pump back up....WW

Had the same problem with my 08 (65000 miles)changed the oil and it still made some noise until it ran for 5 10 min. or so, drained the oil and filled the oil filter up with Marvel Mystery oil and topped off with5-30 mobil one no problem since.I think one of the lifters was dirty and not pumping up The MMO is for sticky lifters and i have used it on other cars for years.
