tire monitor sensors
I need to replace the tire pressure monitors in my 06 convertible. Looking at dealer price for Delco(expensive) was wondering if anyone had good luck with after market product. I'm looking to replace all 4

I had a problem with one of my sensors last night, apparently. My dash read Front L XX Front R 33 after lighting up and making ding ding noise. I took my car to my favorite tire store and got a quote of $125 each installed, which included re-balancing the tire and resetting the code/computer. I had only planned to replace the left front sensor. Following some tests, my guy at California Tire in Newbury Park said the sensor now is working properly and it was unusual to have sensors needing replacing on a 2011 car. Bottom line, I did not have the work done yet at the recommendation of my tire specialist. He said they more commonly go out at about 7 or 8 years.

The OEM TPMS sensors in 2005-2007 were made by Schrader. I got real lucky and landed 4 of them for my 2006 some months ago for $29.00 each from Rock Auto. They were trying to get rid of stock.
I tried them with my relearn tool and they worked perfectly.
They look exactly the same as my original ones that I replaced that were 10 years old (still working)
I do plan on trying to recondition the old original ones just for something to do.
I'll dig out the old batteries and replace them with new batteries, and seal them up again.

I learned that sensors will occasionally give a false reading, then will reset with a few start up cycles over 24 hours. One of mine showed "0" pressure, then the next day showed, "flat tire". Obviously, neither was the case.
I waited a full day, it reset, now working fine. So, don't rush out and buy new sensors just because one is acting weird.
BTW, the initial "0" psi reading was immediately after having my trans fluid changed at the local Chevy dealer. Like I said, it reset itself after 24 hours.

Got some OEM ones in GM packaging off eBay from a dealer on Oregon, I believe, called Trunk Monkey. $125 or so for 4, don't remember he exact price. Reset fine with a GM tool I bought. They don't activate until under pressure, so age is less important, but the ones I got wer'nt old. DONT FORGET NUTS! They don't come with them and go easy on tightening them. Aluminum fine thread.

Depending on the year, they have all the brands: VDO, Dorman, Schrader, Standard Motor Products, Airtex/Wells, AC Delco, Denso, etc.
Depending upon the year, either ACDelco or Schrader are the OEM Sensor for a particular year.
Chances are, if a multi Fit sensor is used, it is very difficult to get programmed correctly.

I also bought from Amazon OEM, cause I read of people buying after market and have problems down the road.

Last time I bought some I got them from Gene Cully at Cultag.

As long as they are the same model, no...and the tire doesn't even need to be removed from the wheel either. If the replacement sensor is a different maker, it could weigh more or less...then I would re-balance.

okay that's cool, I need to buy a set as one of mine has been acting up for over a year - I would buy the AC Delco replacements off of Amazon which I presume would be the same size/weight as the OEM ones?

I would expect so...they have a peanut shape to them. Also, be sure to test them with a re-learn tool before breaking the bead and installing them. Some here have had a bad one and had to pay the tire people twice for the install

You can do the learn procedure prior to installation by using the tool on one sensor at a time. The first one will then go in the LF, next in RF, then,RR, and finally in LR. If any fail to be recognized, you have to start over. The car doesn't care where the sensors are, but just the order in which they were programmed.
There have been several reports of bad sensors coming from ebay and/or Amazon, so it's a good idea to test them before mounting.
I'm still using the OEM sensors in my '08 with 142K miles showing. However, I did drive about 8K with no sensors and another 6-8K with clonable sensors from Orange Electronics. Titan also produces clonable sensors in the under $200/4 range.
