Default What is this disconnected cable under car for? (PPI)

Hello all,

Picked up my base C6 about 6 months ago, sadly most of this time is winter storage. Patiently waiting for rain to wash away any leftover salt here in Michigan. Anyways going through my PPI documentation, and I came across the below image. It appears to be a disconnected cable for sumn? The dealer did not go into any detail on the written report. Does anyone know what it could potentially be for?

What I know:
2010 Base C6 - 39k miles
Carfax suggests I am the 7th owner (car is in perfect working order with new fluids, does not physically or mechanically seem to have this many owners though it did scare me during the purchase!)
Corsa exhaust (unsure if there are valves, pretty sure there are no valves on my Corsa from what I can see in the tips?)

Including inspection photo gallery for those few interested: https://imgur.com/a/QrwH7in

It's a skip shift eliminator. Makes the computer think the 2nd-gear lockout solenoid is plugged-in when it isn't. Allows the driver to shift to 2nd even when the 1->4 dash light is illuminated.

OHHHHHH! Yep heard of that. When I originally brought the car home I was all confused with the 1->4 dash light. After some research found this skip shift thing and assumed mine had it, no clue this picture was highlighting that though! Thanks.

If that is skip shift eliminator, leave it in. When I first got my Z06, the skip shift was so incredibly intrusive in everyday in-city driving. If skip shift were 1-3 instead of 1-4 it wouldn't be too bad but having to shift into 4th at 15-20mph was borderline dangerous if you had the need to accelerate. I had my skip shift eliminated through a tune so I can't confirm the above statements.

Yes on the skip shift elimintor device, but its the type for a C5, and not a C 6 where you just swap the fuse in the engine fuse box to an resistor fuse.

That's not what we did with my 2008 Z06 back in 2009. The device we used covered both C5 and C6.

Will for sure keep it in. Sounds horrible to be forced into 4th from 1st? I understand GM had to work around the emissions but man oh man... Quite a steep gear change there!

While it's annoying, you quickly learn to just not shift out of first until you are above where it activates. I did the fuse like Dano mentioned, cheap and easy, but what you have works just as well. You will still see the dash light but nothing happens.

Read to understand why the C5 had to have the resistor there , and then on the C6 since it was only the single circuit at the fuse block, the fuse just needed to be changed out to resistor type in the fuse block isntead.

That’s funny regarding the built in skip gear device. I’ve owned my vette for 18 years (bought new 06) and never once has it blocked me from selecting any gear. Either my skip gear device is broken or I instinctively shift at higher speeds/RPM because it’s never come into play.

If you shift from 1st above 20 mph, it doesn't engage. Why anyone would shift out of 1st under 20 mph

OP while it's in storage would be a good time to swap the clutch master cylinder if the vehicle still has the original (clear fluid reservoir).

Thanks for the suggestion and it’s probably a good idea.... As you say why be grabbing gears under 20 mph?

JABCAT out of curiosity, why would I want to swap the clutch master cylinder if there are no present issues? Asking because when the dealer changed all fluids the mechanic warned me not to touch it unless it was starting to cause problems. He claimed that the clutch fluid/master cylinder was pretty touchy for some reason.

Skip shift thingy as others have said.

I'm not sure why people disable it. In my ZR1, it has never activated unexpectedly, and never once have I thought to disable. I see the 1-4 light sometimes as I accelerate in first, but it always goes out by the time I shift to 2nd. It does work, as I intentionally tried it once, and it forced me into 4th.

Is it programmed differently for Base/Z51/GS/Z06/ZR1?

Just a fyi, but if car has an aftermarket tune, 1-4 skip shift is the first thing that is turned off.
So if light only comes on when you start the car only, then figure is was turned off in the tune.

Because it's likely not a matter of if you'll have issues, but when. I had problems with my 2008 Z06 for years because an updated one from GM didn't exist back then. Eventually I swapped it out for an aftermarket Tick adjustable. Sold that car in 2015 and bought a 2010 ZR1 in 2019 with only 12K miles on it. Week two, it stuck to the floor and I had to pump it back up by hand just like my 2008 Z06 when it was acting up. The second time it happened in that car (within another week or two), I had it replaced. Fortunately, I was in a parking lot both times and not on the highway. There's a reason the NHTSA issues a bulletin on it. Needless to say, when I picked up my Grand Sport in 2022, I changed the master cylinder week one.

Because as VetteVinnie says, it's just a matter of time until it fails. It also generally gives no warning, clutch pedal will just stick to the floor. Thankfully on my Z06 it happened pulling out of my garage, so I just pushed it back in.

The new part is only $100, so cheap insurance.
