I took my '09 out on the local freeway this morning just to let it stretch its legs. Once on the freeway, which was pretty empty on a Sunday morning, I slid on up to 100 mph before I realized that I was going that fast. I waited for a long stretch of open highway and ran it up to 130 mph. After I thought about it I realized that that was probably the fastest I've ever driven in my life. In the old days, when I was young and brave, the new cars were probably not capable of much more than 120. I've had a friend tell me that his C5 would hunker down at speeds over 100 mph, adding to the stability of the platform. I didn't notice any "hunkering" but I was very impressed at how effortlessly the car shot up to 130 mph while behaving like it was cruising along at 70 mph. What a great experience. I'm betting it would be stable all the way up to the top end if I could find a safe place to try it and the courage to do it. I'm usually afraid to hit high speeds because of the crappy third world road surfaces that we have "acquired" here in California, but this is a recently opened stretch of road and the surface is relatively new.

Believe me I know the feeling. Did the same thing as you one early morning in my '13 GS and hit 145mph. The car was very stable and felt like it had waaaaay more to go. I was probably 60% into the throttle in 6th gear (MN6) and cruising along for maybe a mile I'm guessing. Was a great feeling and the only time I did it.

I certainly feel better about my loved one's safety knowing people are letting the Vettes stretch their legs on the same roads the rest of us use.

Why not take it to the track and spare the rest of us?

And track events can cost hundreds of dollars and you play by their rules. Now I'm not saying disregard the law, but it is fun every now and then to really open her up. I'm also not saying hit 140+ in traffic or when other people are around either..but if the roads open..why not just don't get caught..there's plenty of roads here in Texas, like the GBT or Chisholm Trail Tollway that will have literally nobody on them at times, and it's super easy to get your car in the triple digits. And sure you come up on someone quick, but most of us here this isn't our first sports car and we know how judge these kinds of things.

Well lets do the math. Traveling at 137 mph you run the length of a football field every 1.5 seconds.

and there are plenty of places all over this great country of ours that allow opening up of the car (even on the east coast) to have a "good day" AKA over a 100mph without endangering anyone but yourself.


100 mph: I call it a good day for good reason.

These cars can hit 110-115 from a stand still in a 1/4 mile. If you are doing freeway legal speed and bust it open to 130, I bet it would take maybe 1/4 mile and probably less and you can hit 130 easily in 4th gear and brake to 65 in a couple of seconds. On a deserted roadway, not legal? Sure. Hurting anyone? Potentially just yourself. If cop sees you? You play...you pay. Everyone here knows it.

I do 100 on freeway on-ramps and slow to 60-70 before merging at least once a week. There are lots of roads in the desert that are dead straight and you can see for miles to verify zero traffic. 150 is easy and I've been to 180.
Yes, I go to the track too. However, having another car a few feet away at 120+ is a lot bigger concern than out in the desert alone.
