Default Carrivagio steering wheel delamination? Anyone?

Bought a used carrivagio carbon fiber steering wheel....and just noticed that the clearcoat/lamination is coming apart. Any ideas on how to fix?

Well, I'll comment but from a perspective of no knowledge, and I think that's why none are commenting. Frankly, no one seems to know the process of how this was put together except Caravaggio. Unless you have a high degree of DIY success stories, I don't think this is something many would try on their own.

Tomorrow's Monday. I'd suggest a call/email to Caravaggio with pics. It's hard to understand how this would happen short of some type of weather-related happening. Where did the wheel come from?

I have spoken with John at carrivagio last week and am waiting on a reply. I purchased this (along with a few high end parts) from a forum member that was demodding his z06. Beautiful steering wheel, just noticed a slight separation starting on the top seam of clearcoating and want to get it fixed before it could possibly damage the carbon fiber

Are you sure it's actually delaminating or is it just a seam that you can feel? I can feel a seam over most of the top area of mine but it isn't peeling or delaminating. The weird part is it's perfectly smooth over the top left and the seam starts about the 11 o'clock position and runs all the way to the right spoke where the carbon ends.

If yours is actually peeling, carbon is very difficult to repair. Superglue can hold fraying fiber ends together, but will expand the joint and you'd feel it for sure.

We manufacture a lot of high end 'armored' motorcycle suits and use a fair bit of laminated Kevlar and general carbon fiber.
Without speaking for Carrivagio, I'd say that's just the seam.

If however it is pulling apart then my best guess is that the lamination will have to be redone on a new cut of carbon fiber wrap.

From the pics it's hard to tell if it's separating or if that's just the general seam.

Can feel the seam top and bottom a little.but if you look closely there are a couple spots that are wider/chipped....when I squeeze the wheel you can see the seam expand and contract slightly. Can't seem to get in touch with John....sent him pics and he was going to let me know my options......no word

All good that knowledgeable folks chimed in! However, it almost sounds as if the job will be more than a fix and more like a re-do. Hmm....here's to John having a different opinion.

Obviously you'll want to hear what he says first but yes, looking at the right of the seam as you say I do see the 'dashes'...and to me it looks like the lamination didn't bond into those short areas of fiber.
There's a weave pattern to carbon fiber, like an 'L' shape almost. The vertical side in this case seems to have not grabbed in those few areas up along until making a flush seam. I don't know that those gaps developed over time or if made that way originally, but of course see what he has to say and what your options are.

Good luck!

How old is the steering wheel?
Is it still under warranty?

OP is stating this post concerns second hand/ used steering wheel.

I thought Carrivagio had a good rep.
Maybe those faults are why it was sold to the OP?
Maybe OP cost for this wheel was free?
Maybe the wheel was originally sold as a blem.

At this time, I don't think there should be any warranty without further discovery.

Carrivagio should respond with a repair estimate at the very least.
With replacement at $2.2K OP may not like the repair estimate.

Non the less Carrivagio needs to answer the phone.

What a thread/ story...good luck.

I was basically looking/calling carrivagio for fix estimates....not warranty. I knew that warranty more than likely wouldn't transfer. But a response from them is surely warranted

To Carrivagio steering wheel delamination? Anyone?

There's a thread (shock and disbelief) about the same co. Depending on what you find for a fix I would think about f'glass resin in a hypo needle to inject in the crack. After a few fills you can gently sand and buff. Maybe.

I wanted to buy some new seats, rethinking that now. See how this one goes first.
