Default Dumb mistake, simple answer please

Sunday I changed the oil on my 07 Base. I put in 6 qts of oil, I know now it's suppose to be 5.5 qts. Do I have to remove 1/2 qt or should it be ok?

The reality is 1/2 quart extra won't really hurt. If you are uneasy, the easiest way to drop the level is to remove the oil filter and drain it, then reinstall. That will get you pretty close.

Thanks, that's what I thought, I just didn't know if 1/2 qt extra will do any harm?

Unless you are completely draining (leaving the container upside down in the funnel for a long time) or using a measured fill station, you are not going to get 6 full qts. from 6 one quart containers anyway. I always dump 6 containers in knowing I am only getting around 5.5-5.8 qts. depending on my patience and the ambient air temp that day.

If you are concerned, however, buy a cheap turkey baster and suck the oil out from the oil fill cap opening.

It would have to be a very long baster... .The OP has a 2007 base model, should be a wet sump LS2 .. ....WW

Simple answer is to fill to the correct spot on the dipstick...forget the number of quarts.

If the oil fill location is in the valve cover, there aint much oil to be found up there when the engine isn't running and if it leads to the crankcase you'd have to have a pretty long baster.

'05 A4 Z51 here, I always add 6 quarts and never a problem. IIRC the Z51 requires 6 quarts, I think it has an oil cooler. 6 quarts puts me a touch above the full mark, no big deal!

I have an '07 Z51 auto which doesn't have the oil cooler that the additional 1/2 quart is supposed to be for. I always add 6 quarts because it is easier and neater. Always comes out perfect on the dipstick. Plus or minus a quart isn't going to hurt anything.
