What is this thing under my hood?!
Can someone tell me what this bracket is for? It might be on all C6's
It's on both sides of the car, one has a rubber seal over it, the other doesn't.
It looks like a latch to hold down the hood, but it is not mechanical at all, it does not move at all, and when the hood is down it is NOT holding it, If the hood where detached from all the brackets and pushed back half an inch or an inch maybe then it would hold it down.
It's a heavy *** metal bracket that seems pointless to me since it's not holding the hood and I'd honestly prefer to remove it lmao.
My best guess is that it is there in case of an accident so that the hood doesn't go through the windshield and decapitate the driver? But I could be wrong, I'd like other peoples opinions or any actual facts on this piece.
I put pictures with arrows, and a picture of where it goes in the hood.
UPDATE ------------------
Thank you all for all of your wonderful help!
As a result I have come to the conclusion that I will be unbolting all the fenders, taking a giant ****, replacing all the glass with lexan, and driving the car off a canyon. You all have been very helpful! It's so wonderful to have all of the combined minds of the internet to assist me!

This is off-topic, but ...
I am wondering why the positive battery cable (Red) on the OP's Corvette is on the opposite side of the battery than what's on my 2011 GS?
Positive (Red) cable is also routed differently.

Well, Murphy's Law.
If you remove it and you do have an incident, just maybe that hook will allow you to drive away.
Maybe not.... just quoting that favorite law.
Chrome it, paint it body color, hydro dip in carbon fiber or accented paint to match any under hood color accents.

I think that I would just leave it alone. It does have a purpose.

Looks like it is to keep the hood from going into the windshield. I'll keep mine, you can remove your if you want.

Like the guy said if you have a head-on it "latches" the back of the hood, forcing the hood to become part of the "crumple zone" not sure I spelled that right? but that's what the hooks are for. look under the hood on a VW rabbit and you will see the same thing.

you act as if the engineers can't make a mistake, or sometimes grossly overcompensate, like the concept a "recall" is an unheard of term, like they are all knowing gods....

Think of the weight reduction if you removed those two pieces of useless metal ... I am thinking that you would give up about 1 1/2 pounds of unneeded weight.
On the other hand, go take a good ****, and you could save yourself about the same weight as what those two pieces of metal weigh.

Every single part can be made lighter, smaller, better, or more efficient. However, every part is made "on a budget" for a manufacturer. There is pretty much a better alternative to every part of any mass produced car that you can think of. Sometimes this has a sacrifice, and others there is only gains. Furthermore, many parts can be engineered better with even the same materials, however it would cost more to machine or create that said part. Assuming, the engineers are all knowing gods and that a better design of something is impossible is insanity...

Well, you can always yank the doors, hood and rear hatch off the car ... that might get you about a 3 tenths reduction in your 1/4 mile ETs.
