Default another gas smell

I've read a bunch of threads and...........
Have been under the car twice and everything both tanks , the connecting pipe and all the lines that I can possible see and I do not see any signs of a leak or any staining on anything. I can smell gas in the garage when the car sits overnight but not real bad. It's an 08 A6 with 140,000 miles so I guess the cost is on me and i've heard it's rather expensive. Are there any other things that I can check myself?

I think that techs would perform a smoke test, this maybe the best solution for you.

I looked again cannot find a leak. A little smell under the hood but that might be normal. I'm going to try a new gas cap and see what happens. I spoke with my guy today and he said he could get the tank out without dropping the trans, might be my last resort.

On my 1998 Z28 I cut a hole in the rear deck floor and pulled the fuel pump that way and installed a trap door for future issues.
Has anyone tried this with a Corvette and if not why? The rear deck is plastic correct?

There was some discussion about doing that, but it was not a good idea, but I can't remember why. I think it would be more trouble than dropping the tank.

If you have the manual trans, no need to drop it. The autos have been done without removal, but obviously much less room to work in. But I believe that someone has done it.

Most likely you have the same problem many of us have had. There is a plastic elbow at the top of the fuel module that cracks and releases fumes. Dropping the take and replacing the fuel pump module is the only way to fix this. It's difficult on a manual and almost impossible on an auto without dropping some of the rear suspension. I fixed mine about two years ago now and haven't had a problem since.

Tough to see fuel vapor from the top of the fuel tank. Fuel droplets may occur on the drivers side tank with at least 1/2 a tank of fuel. Service bulletin is 10yrs. 120,000 miles, maybe GM will work with you since you exceeded the mileage.

OK so I just bought a used gas tank on ebay and am going to pick up a New fuel pump. My tuner has an opening for me Sept 6th. In the meantime I borrowed a boar snake w/light form the maint. guy at work and am going to look around inside tomorrow.

The thing is at 1/2 a tank or less no fuel smell but when I fill it up it smells a lot. If it was the fuel pump leaking it would leak all the time. What else is in there? I'm thinking the gas tank must be cracked somewhere on top? Anybody have this issue?

I am just guessing here but since there are two gas tanks, maybe the transfer tube between the two tanks is cracked.

This picture should give you an idea of what you are up against. The area above the tanks is steel and a structural member. Damage it an you've ruined the car.

It will probably turn out to be the plastic elbow on fuel pump , had mine replaced under service bullentin ,here is picture of it i am sure someone can post the service bullentin number.

You can see the crack on the top fitting.

Here is a picture of the fuel tanks, lines etc approximately the way they sit in the car. The big tube that joins them across the top is metal. the common problem with the gas smell is caused by the plastic fittings cracking.

10 years from the date the car went into service or 120K miles, which ever comes first, I believe..
You should probably contact a dealer though.

OK OK so I replaced that dreaded fuel pump because of the cracks. I paid out of pocket but it wasn't too bad. I spent around $1,000 parts and labor. I bought a used tank just in case but I did not need it because it was just the pump. I'm putting the tank in the used parts for sale section if anyone needs one. Thanx for all your help.
