Default Wood For Jack / Jackstands

Hello all,

Please take it easy on me. This is my first time using wood in between the car and the jack / jack stands. Is there any specific type of wood I need to buy from the hardware store to do the same as the pictures attached?

I'm a little worried about the wood cracking or splitting especially when used with the jackstands.

Thank you.

Exactly! Be afraid. It has to be a hardwood.

I recommend a hockey puck for use on the jack cradle - use only one puck max.
Using wood is ok imo if you don't stack blocks(they easily can slip - I know -it causes a lot of damage).

I've used a standard 2x6 (pine) in the past with no problems.

I'm no expert, but put the grain opposite of the edges. I've always done that and have never split a wood spacer.

2x10 or 2x12 pine. There are several threads on how to make ramps, or pieces for using the jack with. Use the search option, or if you can't find it, send me a msg. I have made them before.

Worked well and I felt safe using wood this way. As for picking up front or rear I used
two pieces of yellow pine. The measurements being 2"x 6"x 24" that were screwed together lengthwise.

Use yellow pine or treated wood.

Doesn't have to be hard wood at all. As a matter of fact, sometimes the softer wood works best because it kinda lets things "dig in" and keep a better grip. Now all this of course goes with the fact that the wood should be big enough so as it spreads the load of some of the delicate pieces underneath the car. I use a piece of 2X6 pine that runs the entire length of the front cross member (or what ever one prefers to call it)......

My ramps and crossmember supports are made of Fir. No problems in the 8+ years I have used them.

Thank you for the pictures!!! They're perfect.

Do you use the same wood between the jack and the car's jack points as well?

This photo you show is one I took probably 10-12 years ago when I first built these wood crossmembers or cradles. They are fir and I am still using the same pieces without any cracking or splitting. I place my floor jack in the middle and jack directly on the wood without any problems.

As I said in my original response, I used " Fir"
