'06 won't shift out of park
My '06 base convertible with 79000 won't shift out of park. The car will start but the shifter can be moved with no resistance. It doesn't hit any detents and, of course, the car won't go into any gear. What's up?

Might be the bushings on the shifter or the trans linkage. Mine just went on the shifter in my 08. Search for shifter bushings and there are some write ups on fixing them. I bought a multipack of bushings at oriellys for 7-8$. NOt a hard fix just bothersome that a cheap part can sideline a. Ice car. Lol
The offending bushing and the pack I bought.

You may want to try this first.
If you ever hold the brake pedal down but still
cannot shift out of PARK (P), try this:
1. Press the regular brake.
2. Press the Acc. button twice to place the
ignition in accessory mode. See Ignition
Positions on page 90 for more information.
3. Apply and hold the brake until the end of
Step 4.
4. Shift to NEUTRAL (N).
5. Start the engine and then shift to the drive
gear you want.
6. Have your vehicle inspected by your dealer as
soon as possible.
This is just to get you going, but you still have a problem which could be the shifter itself.

If it was the pawl that was stuck the shifter would not move
I had that issue too and cut the pawl off so it would not lock

I agree with it must be the bushings or the cable.

Those are the exact symptoms of a broken shift cable. Do a search and you will find several threads. I chose to do the entire cable ($55 retail) rather than just the bushings because the cable itself has been known to break and I didn't want to repeat being stuck again next year. The first cable lasted 10 years so I expect at least 10 more years of reliable service.

No resistance of the shifter to shift means that the shifter is no longer connected to the transmission in the rear. Most commonly due to a cable grommet end failure. Been there and done that with the front grommet.

Two checks, jack up the car and see if the cable is attached to the transmission. It it is, remove the center console and then the the shifter.
If you can pull the shifter up freely the grommet is broken. A simple fix at that point. If connected, then you need the new cable. Cable is about $50. not sure of labor cost. If you do it yourself, I hope you have a lift.

This just happened to me today while pulling into my garage. The A6 seems to be stuck in Neutral. I can move the shifter with minimal resistance, and no matter what gear it is in, it's really just neutral.
I'm really hoping that it's the grommet and not the cable itself. I don't have a lift... just a floor jack and a pair of stands. This is my DD and I can't go long with it not working.
