It can be cleaned
1)Remove radio surround console
2) remove the unit (4 screws)
3) Remove the top cover of the unit (6 screws)
4) manually move the CD player slide table from the park position until the laser lens can be seen
5) use a Q-Tip with alcohol to clean the lens
6) Move the slide table back to park position
7) re-install the unit cover
8) Install the unit
9) Install the Radio surround console.
Here is a thread that shows the pics etc.
It was an experimental destruction of the Nav unit to find out it's workings.
Some good additional observations and input from fellow members

Some times you can luck out if it just dust on the top of the lens, with using canned air in the CD slot to blow the dust off the lens.
Some times the top of lens is so thick with dust and grim, you have to use alcohol and a Q tip to clean the lens isntead. Hence pull the radio and it covers to get to the laser lens.
Lastly, some times is not a dust/film on the top of lens causing a problem, but dust/film down in the lower prism/refactor parts of the laser that needs to be cleaned instead. To do this, you have to pull the dust protector at the lens, so you can get down under the top lens to clean the lower parts instead.
