Please check your HB reguarly
As some of you know I just had my harmonic balancer replaced with a PowerBond PB1117SS, I was shown the old one and I'm glad I had it done. One edge where the bonding takes place was approx. 1/8th" higher than the other opposite side, hence the wobble. Whether it was about to fail I have no idea but it had become worse in just over the last 6 months. Since they are pretty well hidden from view I think the once overall check would miss them unless you take a flashlite and look for a wobble.
Anyways the new one runs straight and true so just an FYI to maybe save you a little grief

Did you collect the old one?
Should have kept it for posterity's sake.

Thanks for the heads up. You scared me! I just checked mine. It has 45,900 miles on it and looks straight with no worn belt. Guess I'm lucky.

So far, I will assume that it was like this when new.
The belt edges are fine, no chirps when cold.

I checked mine last week. Has 32k miles, and the outside edges wobble a bit but no worse than the last time I checked it -- two (three?) years ago. The belt grooves actually run truer than the outside of the balancer.
So far, I will assume that it was like this when new.

What happens when the HB fails? Is it catastrophic?
I'm surprised that NSF's failed since his car is fairly new and he never drives it.

Pay me now or pay me later I guess, not trying to scare anyone but check it regularly

PS catastrophic, if it comes apart at say 3000 RPms, well you guess

Melting Slicks
Usually the outer hub will move forward enough to destroy the belts and grind against the steering rack. By then you'll know it's pretty bad

O.P. Thanks for the heads up. I am new to C6 ownership as of this June and Today I checked the HB along with other stuff and found for 52k miles and 12 years the balancer and belt looked new with no wobble. Fair to say they are new along with a new Duralast Gold I spotted. I am great full I got a well maintained used Vette so now all I have rattling around in my head is the A4 No shift shifter syndrome to check into soon.. thanks again

My sons HB failed, and the outer ring crashed into the timing cover and put a deep gouge into it. Some members have commented that it can spin the other way and hit the steering rack.
