Default would the 4 speed auto be sportier than the 6 speed auto?

I feel like they made a 6 speed for better fuel economy. but is the 2005 4 speed auto better in terms of track?

Simple answer ...

Had the A4 been better at anything vs the A6, GM would never have dumped the A4 for the A6.

Except for the longevity of the A4 tranny.

In general, more gears means you can keep the RPMs closer to the powerband at all times than with fewer gears. Of course, there is a practical limit. Most gearboxes that have over 4 or 5 speeds are overdrives as is the case with the C6 -- I think 5th and 6th are both less than 1:1.

Back in the day, a 4-speed was a big deal over a 3-speed (sticks). The numbers in the original Olds "4-4-2" muscle car meant it had a 4-speed, 4-barrel carb, and dual exhaust.

the A4 4L65E is the strongest auto trany put in any year of C6.easier to tune or rebuild and the majority of tuners are lost trying to tune A6's.ECS and RPM transmission no longer care to build A6's because of all the issues with them.if you find the right builder, tuner for the A6 good luck to you.friends car is on its 4th A6 and will have to see how this one holds up.most conversions done on C6 cars with A6 or M6 go to 4 speed

Exactly. My C5 A4 Pulled better than my C6 A6. As you asked, the A6 is all about overdrive to meet corporate fuel economy and avoid the sin tax.

The A4 has the following ratios;
3.06
1.63
1.00
.070
Standard rear was 2.73 with and optional 3.15

A6
4.02
2.36
1.53
1.15
0.85
0.67
rear 2.56 After 2007 model, the 2.73 became an option.

So as you can see, 4th gear in the A4 was an overdrive while the A6 it does not come into effect until 5th gear. Also the difference is the rear gear is a higher gear in the A6.

If you have the A6, simply use the paddles so you can control the shift points and most likely at the drag strip you will not ever need 5th or 6th.

Usually pros and cons to any kind of tranny set up. Lots of variables to consider. But lets face it....in todays testosterone filled auto world it sounds much better when man can thump chest while saying..."Me have 6 speed, and you have only 4".....:

From what I remember reading, A4's are more desirable if you're building a race transmission or modifying one for the track, they seem to be stronger then the A6's. Me personally, I don't race so I'd prefer the A6 with the paddle shifters...my next C6 will have that setup.
