So I'm 20 and have had my corvette for about 3 months. Got a super speeder for going 86 in a 65. Not sure about other states, but in Georgia, anything 85 and over is considered a super speeder. I got clocked from a GSP officer that was entering the highway probably 100 yards in front of me but he got me with his rear facing radar. I was surprised he didn't bump it down 2 mph due to my previous clean record and just the fact that he was super understanding and cool about it, but it was my fault for speeding and I can't blame anyone else for that. Either way, I'm looking to buy a radar detector(I know its a little late for that) to maybe avoid this situation in the future. I understand that the best way to avoid this is to drive the speed limit which I normally do, but I still want to have a radar detector. It seems like the valentine 1 is the way to go but if anyone has any suggestions, please inform me.

Might be worth your time to get an attorney in an attempt to get it reduced. The attorney might be able to get it lowered or tossed if you do have a good driving record. Your insurance could beat you up over this. It’s not really fast but super speeder has a bad sound to it. My .02 cents worth.

sorry to hear about your recent encounter. I've recently been thinking about getting radar detector too.
knock on wood, I haven't been ticketed yet. but try as I might, I know that my driver style will get me one. I have had some good runs down the I-5 in central California that would probably get me arrested.

Yeah I'm hoping that when I go to court they will have me do community service or a driving class to reduce the points on my license or fine amount. This is what others that I know have gotten super speeders are usually are offered.

Also, I'm expecting my insurance to really nail me after this even if they reduce it to a regular speeding ticket.

If allowed....at the very least...go to court, tell the judge you understand the reason for the ticket. The car is fairly new to you, hou were alone in the car, and did not realize you were cruising that fast. You have a clean record, and hope you will have a chance to keep it that way.

Many (most?) jurisdictions no longer allow anyone to appear for a traffic citation without first submitting a Not Guilty plea. This is done to keep the case load down, as too many people want to appear simply so they can ask the court for leniency. If your jurisdiction allows you to appear without a plea, you should do so.

Search radar detectors in the forum should bring up some help for you. I make at least one trip a month from San Diego to Phoenix/Casa Grande, AZ. My Valentine 1 has saved me more times than I can count. I move it from car to car depending on which car I am taking on the trip. I use a Blendmount to mount it in each car. My $.02 worth.

I've had radar detectors for years and they have paid for themselves hundreds of times over if not more. I've always went with Beltronics in the past but these are no longer made since they were bought out by Escort so I'd recommend Escort myself, I just recently bought one specifically for the Corvette so I wouldn't have to swap it between vehicles. I haven't had a chance to try it out yet because of the snow on the ground but it's warming up here so I might be able to get out soon to try it. Here's the one I bought.

On a side note, I agree with Cooter Tech's suggestion, at your age this could be a big hit on your insurance. There's a good chance they could get it reduced or even dropped because there's a lot of proof on the inaccuracy of radar. I wish I was 20 again and had a Corvette.

These conversations always intrigue me. I'm still trying to figure out how something pays for itself over and over...when in the whole scheme of things, it's 100% lost money. All one has to do is obey the posted speed (or typically no more than 10 mph over), and you could save all that cash. Do I speed? Yes. 75 in a 70. Out west: 80 in a 75. I do not speed in anything under 55 as it's usually residential, city, or there are children around.

Cooter Tech is right, there are attorneys who specialize
in this. 1 mph over, I would be surprised if a lawyer could
not get it reduced. Lawyer may be cheaper than insurance hit.

I live in north GA and got a ticket, not a super speeder but .. retain a lawyer , well worth the money , not only for the reduction in the cost of the ticket but you are also getting a surcharge for the next 3 years

My ticket was reduced to an obstrutiong the roadway .......

Escort Passport detector with integral GPS, which tells you where the red light cameras are, and also locks out false alarms. It takes YEARS to really use a radar detector properly. And if you speed you will get caught radar detector or not. I use it to press the limit by 10 MPH at most, and I love knowing where they are in advance,

In NYS, you plead "not guilty," go to court and more often than not, the prosecutor or cop makes a deal to a lessor offense to avoid trial (pleas bargaining). Sometimes they negotiate a non-moving violation. Just be nice. You will get the ticket reduced...

Doesn't the lawyer cost you more than the increased insurance premiums, even over a three year period?

I can't imagine the rates going up that much. My last ticket, about 3 or 4 years ago, was 67 in a 50, and it was sort of a speed trap (a half mile behind the speed limit was 70). Anyway, my insurance rates didn't change at all.

There is an abundance of paralegals here that won't be that expensive, especially in relation to a premium hike on a 20 year old.

Advice to OP is keep an eye out for LEO, it has saved my bacon many a time, I have never owned a radar detector (I live in a province where it is illegal to even have one in your possession let alone use it).

That system works well for me also since my last speeding ticket was about 12 years ago. Around these parts I find that most people speed so just going with the flow of the traffic is a fairly safe thing to do.

This past summer I was on my way to a car club event and was traveling the freeway but just going with the flow of traffic. I noticed a black Toyota in my mirror coming fairly fast and constantly changing lanes like he was running a slalom course around the cars in both lanes.

I had a black Suburban in the lane ahead of me so I switched to the slow lane and the black Toyota proceeded to tailgate the Suburban flashing his high beams to let him by. The Suburban stayed in his lane and maintained his speed causing the Toyota to pass him on the right and then swerve into his lane cutting him off and forcing him to brake.

That's when I found out that our local highway patrol used unmarked black Suburbans as ghost cars. It made my day and took a while for me to lose the grin on my face as that driver must have learned an expensive lesson that day and might have ended up using public transit for a while.

Yeah again I understand that I am in the wrong and accept whatever penalty I get. This thread was made to help me decide on which radar detector to get. I just wanted to share why I was looking to buy one.

Not that way in Georgia , I got caught up in a speed trap on a road by my home that many routinely go 15 to 20 mph over,
guess I got picked out of the crowd because of the color and type of car ......she was surprised when I rolled my window down and it was this old grey haired man lol lol

lawyer cost me 200, ticket 25 and i still have a clean record , it would have cost me 250 for the ticket , points on my licence plus insurance points and surcharge for going greater than 15 mph over the speed limit which results in a 3 year insurance surcharge ... lucky for me that it was not a super speeder as that is an additional 400 a year charged by the state

so the lawyer is cheaper , did not want to chance a prosecutor who might be in a bad mood because he was stuck in traffic court

I have an Escort now and I do make it a point to drive slower , especially on 85 where the OP got his ticket

OP can't go wrong with an Escort ... i have two older and much cheaper 9500 models , they work good enough for me . I also have the mirror mount ...and mirror tap
