Need suggestion
Fellows! Last night when I started my 2008 Z06, I noticed clicking noise in the engine bay. I open the hood and did not noticed anything unusual but sure the clicking noise is there. I decided to take it to the dealer and after several hours of waiting, here comes the bad news. They said I need a new engine!! btw my car only has 16,300 miles on it so I was in shock. Told them that I will take it to different dealership to ask for second opinion. They then told me to wait and they will contact GM and see if they can atleast help out or something because they quoted me for about 19k for engine and labor. I will find out tomorrow what GM response is. Any suggestions guys? FYI: No engine check light or any indications of any problem...I actually drive it to the dealership and did not loose any power or anything binding.

Did they tell you what had/or is failing?

They did not say. They told me it could be a loose bearings inside but they don't want to open it up coz they said it will cost me more on labor to end up with needing new engine anyway. I still can't believe because my car never even see a track.

Had a similar problem. Start with cleaning the fuel injectors either professionally or 2-3 bottles of techtron and keep it running until it smooths out or blows up. What do you have to loose?

I would also start a thread in the C6 Z06 forum.
Even though I put 70,000 miles on one, I was fortunate and never really had any problems. One of the more major concerns is valve guide issues, but ticking isn't one of the symptoms, AFAIK. Weird ticking is one symptom of a lifter issue, however.
I found when my LS2 developed a lifter issue, it was cheaper to have an LS3 crate engine installed, than rebuilding my LS2.

$19k to replace an engine is insane.

ticking noise
I agree with HEBEBAD, run some injector cleaner through it.
while hydraulic lifters will tick when failing, unless you're low on oil, i
haven't heard of newer cars doing this.
fuel injectors will tick when failing or not working properly.
at least it's cheaper then an engine replacement.
I would also ask for a more detailed explanation of the reasoning too.
even if you did decide to get a new engine, I've to believe that their are cheaper crate engines out their ( even with labor factored in ).
good luck!

Thanks guys for all the suggestions!!
Here is the update I got this morning.
They contacted GM and they are willing to participate with the repair.
It will cost me 13k out of pocket
GM only requires engine to be take apart to the point of failure and take pictures...also provide the history of repairs/oil changes done with the car prior.
What do you think guys? should I go for it?
Thanks Much!

at 16.3k miles, unless you did something out of the ordinary
( i.e. ran it low on oil, over revv'ed ), I would not automatically take their offer.
at that price, It is worth it to get at least one more evaluation.
if it comes to the same conclusion, then at least you'd have some piece of mind.
these are pretty tough engines, so I would be a little more suspicious of the dealerships findings.
you mentioned a ticking noise originally, have you at least tried a stethoscope on each injector? easy enough to check at least.
I had one go out at 99k miles, no ticking though, just stopped working.
good luck!

Nope didn't try any of that! I must to admit when it comes to working on cars...my knowledge is ZERO... ... or I must say LAZY....but i make sure everything that need to be done in the car is taking care off...oil change and maintenance required so I must say I was shock when I foiund out their diagnosis.

now a days, it's getting harder & harder to do even basic maintenance.
starting working on cars when still in high school. learned a lot of things the hard way. it did teach me approach problems with a bit of logic and common sense. not a mechanic by any stretch, but a little of thought goes a long way.
I would still strongly suggest a second opinion. if a 2nd one is in agreement, then at least you know that you can trust that shop.
if not in agreement, then that's worth something too.
hope all goes well.

If you aren't experiencing any performance issues, just a ticking noise, I'd be reluctant to spend $19K. I'd be more inclined to take that $19K and put it towards a new car.
But, get an opinion from someone non-dealership related.

Your 2nd opinion should be from an unaffiliated mechanic and do not tell them you already have a 1st opinion. Hopefully this will produce an unbiased opinion on the issue.
Can't remember who said it, but $19k for a new engine is nuts, I'd rather put that towards a new car.
