Problem was there was only AM on the car radio when I was a kid and Dad owned that radio. So more than likely it was Country back when that meant Country and Western.
The earliest memory I have of actually doing anything with the car radio was changing the station while Dad was in the store.
Pissed him off royally and we laughed.
Early 60's.
Earliest music I remember listening to that belonged to us kids was the Beatles. The pop stuff....I Wanna Hold Your Hand, etc.
When FM came around, then it was Cousin Brucie in NYC and all hell broke loose....
Great time as there was not the different genres that we have since then. It was new and it wasn't our parent's stuff. So you had Motown, the Philly sound, NYC rock and roll, and of course the California surf music.
Txs for the memories....

I'd a nifty under dash Panasonic 8T player, could be slid in/out of a bracket so deck could easily be removed.
State-of-the-art 'Anti-Theft' deterrent, y'know.
Even had a 8T recorder. Cutting edge stuff, that.
Before 8 track it was 4 track and before those under dash mounted 45 turn tables. Remember those?
All permitted personalized audio, for automobiles.
Today, its thumb sized FDs w/ GB capacity.
But, AM radio started the entire audio trend FM eventually finished.
In fact, I still have some tapes up in the loft in my barn.

Yes it sure is different today, as is TV.
Any Jackson 5?

Really?
IIRC one of the innovative leaders in these 'technologies' was Lear.
Li'l trivia: Lear made the first (?) private jet, for which it's most renown.
Sure, but not when parked at A&W/beach/drive-in etc.
Biggest threat is accidentally kicking it while tumbling around on front seat.
Sure is, today it's 'HD' & crap's never been seen clearer.
Grew up listening to AM radio through a single 5" speaker on dash.
No tone control, only volume & channel dial.
Members bitching about Blose sound quality makes me LOL.
In my day music augmented listener imagination, today a video tells listener what to think.
Only reason for J5 quips is their junk played 2-3 time 24/7 in their day. "King of Pop' & all that while those other artists had their day, also. As I said, golden age of music.

Would the 45s have a bit of a skipping problem in cars?

No, I never had any Jackson Five stuff. I was up in the loft a few years ago and stumbled across them. All I remember seeing was Beatles, Supremes, and the Byrds, amongst others.

I was watching a "That 70s Show" re-run last night (I think it was the pilot) when Red and Kitty were giving Eric the Vista Cruiser. Kitty tells him, "Now that is not a bedroom on wheels!"
Red: "If I find ONE beer can in there I'm taking it back!"

Nor do I get having loud exhaust AND boom box stereos. Which is the driver listening to? Although I had loud exhaust on cars and bikes when I was younger, having worked around loud machinery for 50 years (and still am) I rather like the quietness.

Compare black music from the Motown era to black "music" today. Hahahaha. Attachment 48332405

See The U.S.A. In Your New Chevrolet
"See The U.S.A. In Your New Chevrolet" by Dinah Shore. And no, I'm not kidding. I remember her singing that song on the radio in 1949; it's my first memory of a song.

They fit in cars because the 78's were not only too large, but they broke easily.
IIRC, the '56 Dodge Le Femme was the first with a 45 player.
You missed that era because you were "Born too Late"

With the 45s, what about skipping when going over bumps? With that Dodge (which I've never heard of, sounds kinda gay) it sounds like the player was a factory option . . . ?
I keep thinking I was born too early vs. too late, til I come to CF and interact with you really old guys.
Ha, both of my older sisters (circa '47 and '41) had ponytails like in that pik.

Just positioning.
I'd thought you older than I, Bruze.
Why I was surprised you'd not heard of early audio tech.
Had I not worked in a car audio shop while in college, I might never of heard of 4T of 45 players, either.
Born same year of Corvette here, another boomer.
Ditto that.
First Vette was a '69 roadster w/ full built 350. 'Cherry Bombs' off headers. Loud, borderline obnoxious; but, at 18, loved it.
Today, NPP is the wild side of sound.
Well Bruze, 99% of Motown & like groups had their musical roots in gospel.
I mean, FWIW.
Yup, I remember radios like that. Remember the mechanical push buttons (optional!) to change channels, which never really stayed zeroed in on the channel? FYI, my DOB was 1950.

What were 4-track players, as someone mentioned previously? In my experience (circa 1950) auto sound went from radio to 8-track to cassette to CD to what we have now.

It was La Femme. I mistakenly used Le, but my French is limited to fries, toast, and kisses. It was a car aimed at women buyers. 1955-1956.

the photos were passed on to me when my Mom passed away, and all of the old memories were distributed between the surviving children.............
also, the record players under the dash were a BIG THING here in the Motor City area in the mid to late '60's...................
worked at a neighbors auto wash in the late '60's and saw many of them in the cars that came through................ the auto wash was on the Detroit / Grosse Pointe border............
and KUDO"S to Bruze for mentioning Motown music............
Hittsville still standing on Grand Blvd. here in the Motor City, although today it is a museum to great times gone bye................
