It looks as though you took that picture from the rear of the car. If so those are the shields for the fuel tanks not a structural member at aall.
Nothing to worry about

If you drive the car at all, you are going to get some discoloration under the car. Either take the car to a shop where it can be inspected or stop worrying about it.

Not if you are like some of the guys around here. Never drive in the rain, and put the car up on your lift for a complete undercarriage cleaning and waxing every time you remove the car from it's clear plastic, air inflated coccoon! 😉

All I see with those pic's is exhaust pipe coating discoloration brought on by long term engine exhaust heat. If your vette is a steel frame model understand that it has a protective coating. Now 90% of the underneath is cast aluminum and fiberglass.

Those are your fuel tank covers, which are galvanized steel IIRC. No need to worry about them even if they are rusting, as they are easily replaced.

Pretty sure they're aluminum. Without a closer look, I'd guess 5052-H32 with a sulfuric anodize type II coating for corrosion protection. It won't turn colors if the coating is compromised. So a brown rust color would only be something on top of the surface, like oil or mud.

When one applies for a driver's license, there should be a mandatory basic car module that everyone should be required to pass. That includes demonstrating how to change a tire, check the basic fluids, etc...

Taking a slight tangent to the thread, you are absolutely correct. However, in a large nation, it is really difficult. The cost of staffing and administration for such education would be HUGE, to say nothing of the inevitable lawsuits from people who claimed they suffered somehow because they were never properly trained.

Fifty-three years ago, in high school Driver Training, my instructor spoke with us (three student drivers) about these things as we drove. I was the only one who knew how to check tire pressure, oil level, and how to change a tire. By the time the course was over, all three knew how to do it. THAT was the process then.

Aren't dads, uncles, neighbors, etc. supposed to teach these things?

Just like when old farts complain about millenials or gen Z'ers they forget to ask themselves "Who raised these ninnies? Who's really to blame?"

I completely agree.

BUT

In a few short years, only a "certified" (by the government) person will be allowed to work on your car. Self driving cars will need no maintenance (except as prescribed by law or the manufacturer) and will automatically return to the dealer for $$ervice as necessary.

You will have to tow (self driving truck) your 'vette to the track because it will be illegal to drive it anywhere except on local (congested) surface streets.

The only issue is "when" not "if" this will happen.
