Default help with battery change

I've got a 2005 corvette convertible.

I got in my car to start it and it wouldn't start.

I got out of the car and hooked up my Deltran battery tender. The lite on the battery tender stayed red for 4 days then started blinking red and green.

I tried to get in the car but could not; I looked in the car and the shifter was in nuetral not reverse.

I bought a Bosch battery; it weighs 47 pounds. I have not taken the old battery out.

The new battery and the old battery do not have any handles/straps to aid in lifting or dropping in.

I write to see if anyone has any ideas on the easiest way to remove the old battery and install the new one. Location of battery has very little manuvering/wiggle room.

This old body will get it done but I'm looking for a way to make it easiest possible.

Go to auto parts store and get a battery strap handle. It will attach to the top posts and let you lift old battery out and set new one in there.

1)Grab a hold of it and pull it out. Its tight, but can be done. 2)Buy a battery strap or make one. 3)Put a pair of vise grips on each pole real tight and lift it out 4)Let someone else do it.

Good luck.

I'm really bad with electronic stuff...really bad. I will need someone to do it for me. I dread to see how much everything is scrambled up when the new battery is installed. But....it will get squared away eventually.

Nothing will get "scrambled up". The only thing you will need to do is re-index the windows. That's it. You CAN do that. It's in the owner's manual. Takes 5 seconds.

To prevent sparking, always remove the negative cable first.
When installing the new battery, attach the negative cable last.
Surprising how many people don't do this.

You'd think so but I've had my battery out numerous times and the clock was always still accurate when I put it back in.

I have never had to re-index the windows, reset the clock, or reset the radio stations when changing the battery on either my '05 or my '11.

Know what you mean about old body.......I would definitely say use a battery strap.. cheap and give you the ability to hang on to battery while you wiggle it out of tight spot.... also make sure you get the strap on right... one end is for size of positive and one end is size of negative battery terminal. Make sure they are grabbing down low on the poles and pull to tighten..and take the ground off first and put it back on last......prevents accidentally grounding the battery if a tool used on the positive terminal happens to hit a body part that is grounded and will cause a spark..not good.. Good luck

I just replaced the battery on my 2013. Easy change. Yes, the windows needed to be re-indexed. I actually read the owner's manual and did it in about 10 seconds. The biggest issue was reprogramming the radio stations on my aftermarket unit.

Just changed the battery on my 09 Z06. Had to index the windows and reset the clock. All the radio presets were retained (OEM radio).

To the OP, some auto parts stores will replace the battery free of charge. While I did my own work on the Z, I bought a battery from Advanced Auto for our family’s minivan and they did the install. For my family Malibu and my Tahoe, the local auto repair shop that sold me the battery did the install for free (AC Delco and the price was the same as an auto parts store). Long paragraph to say that if you trust your car to the place you bought the battery, and they provide this service, you might want to check if they will still do it for you free.

your lucky you didn't burn your deltran out, 1,2,3,4,5 amp battery tenders ARE NOT battery chargers even 5 amps on a dead auto battery is a stretch. One should have at least a ten amp charger around the house

I just put a new battery in my 05 for the 2nd time since brand new. It is very easy and I did have to re-index the windows which is very easy. I cleaned the cables with baking soda and water and installed them. Its on a battery tender plus right now for the winter.

I installed the new battery yesterday.

Bought a battery strap from OReilly auto parts store for 6 bucks; it helped alot. I also got 2 felt washers and silicone grease. They said they would give me 10 bucks for the old battery ( gift card) which is better than pep-boys.

I learned you don't put the silicone grease on the terminals but do so after everything is connected, then you cover the outside.

It was neat to see the car come to life. It started without a hitch. I need to take it for a run this morning before it snows.

Thanks for the responses...they help me do it right and as easy as possible.
