What's the saying about catching flies with honey?
In my experience, working 10 years at a large dealership, it happened over and over. Why would the dealer want to fight this? It's not costing them anything. Why would they want the liabilty of something as serious as a fuel leak in writing?
However, if you're a notorious ******* or a serial nitpicker, they would probably take pleasure in NPF'ing the car.

When you're talking about a $1600-$3000 repair, putting on your smile, your "nice-guy" hat, and picking a slow-period time of day, and day of week that is least crowded doesn't seem too much for some. Unless you like your credit card looking like it's heading to the stars!
It's a used car---what have you got to lose by trying? *
* BTW, in the last year, I've had three items go off warranty (not cars) and each one I asked for assistance and admitted there was nothing they HAD to do about it. I've been very lucky, I admit. All three came across and fixed/replaced items "officially" extending my warranties.

Funny, in my situation when the service manager finally got all the facts on a relatively small problem, and after pretty much calling me a liar, he begrudgingly saw it my way. Then said, well the owner would have probably Caved, if I had gone to her. l suppose just his way of saying well you got me, instead of looking for a win/win in the first place. I bet she will love to hear that...
There's another old saying, don't know if it came from a fly that doesn't like honey or a naysayer.."fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me".

I just read another thread where a new owner had the problem with less than 15k miles on the odometer on his '08. You have to wonder what causes this leak. Some owners have 100k+ miles and no issues. Could it be hitting bad bumps in the road? Twisting the body somehow? Too much ethanol (supposedly tears up rubber/plastic)?? Interesting mystery.

I've spoken to NHTSA about it, and they also believe ethanol has played a role in the plastic embrittlement. My feeling is that it isn't a matter of if it will happen, but when.

My 08 developed the leak 3 months out of CPO warranty, and before the "fix" was authorized by GM. I paid to have the repair done. When GM issued the extended warranty to cover the repair, I submitted a reimbursement form, and was reimbursed about $1600. The original repair was nearly $3000 (my car is an A6). Some of the parts replaced were not covered by the warranty, including the fuel tank. When the warranty was first issued, the car had to fail a smoke test, or the repair would not be performed. So, unless things have changed in the last year, I don't think you can just take your car in and expect the dealer to replace the fuel pump, unless it definitely already has the leak.

Having a new fuel system put on the car to support procharger and found the dreaded crack in that elbow. It's a 2013 GS with 24000 miles. Kind of scary with the exhaust so close.

I agree but I'm not holding my breath. When the shop pulled the hat off the tank to clean it up they found the crack at the base of the elbow. I owe their parts cleaner guy a case of beer!

What they found was a hairline fracture at the base of the elbow, it wasn't actively leaking.as far as I know. It may have never leaked if left unchanged. It was my call to change it while the trans axle and torque tube are out of the car (billet trans and new converter going in as well as new fuel system). I also changed the balancer to an ATI product when the cam went in just because of the known issues with stock balancers. Am I wasting money by being proactive, maybe but I look at it as labor costs saved if these parts fail down the road.

The problem is caused by embrittlement of the plastic, and is exacerbated by ethanol laced fuels. GM used the wrong type of plastic in the pump. It's only a matter of time, it will eventually impact every C6 made as the plastic ages.

It's interesting to see my thread revived after all this time. Your suggestion is exactly what I do every fill-up. I use the Lucas Safeguard Ethanol 16 oz sized bottle that says 4 oz every fill-up. After 2.5 years, so far so good, but it may have been fine without the Lucas too. Who knows? No harm is using the stuff and it's not very expensive. I get 4 uses for each 16 oz bottle which brings it down to less than $2 each fill-up. For the amount of driving I do I think I can swing that.
