C6 key fob replacement
My 05 convertible is almost brand new, 13,000 miles and looks and smells new. Had to put new tires on it today simply because the originals were 13 years old. As much as I scoff at the notion of overage tires, 13 is too old for me even. Anyway, back to the original thought, the car came to me with only one key fob. With a bad battery to boot. I checked on line and found fobs for $70-80. I wasn’t completely sure about the programming so I called the local Chevy dealer. $100. Well, I expected them to be a little higher, so I told them to get one. Went to pick it up and they told me I’d need to make an appointment to get it programmed, and that this would cost me a minimum of $160. 2 hrs labor. I decided this was a rip off. I stopped by a place that does keys/fobs/and general locksmithing just to inquire. OEM fob, programmed and ready to go, tax included, $155. I told them to order one. I think I could probably program one of the $70-80 ones myself, but for some reason I seem to run into difficulties with this sort of thing, so I’d sort of rather a pro do this. How big a deal is the programming? The dealer was talking about #1 and #2 units and they couldn’t be the same, etc. The locksmith type I spoke with said that was BS, as long as the code was correct. Any experience doing this?

The programming is very simple & is outlined in the owner’s manual or online. My GS only came with one fob and I ordered a brand new Vette fob off eBay or amazon (can’t remember which) for $70.
You’ll want to do the long method to unprogram all fobs that were previously connected to the car, then re-program fob #1 & fob #2. There is a specific procedure for each, and yes there is a #1 fob & #2 fob. You also don’t want them near each other while doing the programming. The whole process takes 30 min, so both the dealer & locksmith were giving you some BS.

When GM puts a repair procedure in the owners manual that means it is REALLY simple. You will also be able to get it done right compared to that pond scum dealer who wants 2 hours labor. You will want to do the long procedure because there is another FOB out in the world somewhere that you car will recognize. The long procedure erases all FOBs and starts from scratch. The above link is even better than the owners manual.

I programmed a new one for my 10 Grand Sport and it was no trouble at all.

Trust me, try it yourself, when done you will laugh at yourself of how easy it really was, and these people charging a arm and leg.

As a fellow owner of a '05 C6, mine too only came with one fob, the kind specific to those early model years with the external key. But I've ordered and have used for many years the newer style remote with the internal key. A much nicer fob.

Just looked on Ebay. Search Corvette C6 key fob. The older style was used from 05-07 with an external key, and 08+ has the newer fob. There you'll see the difference.
