Default DIY adding USB for aftermarket radio?

Has anyone added a usb port to their car? I searched and haven't really found threads... and the ones I found were so old the pics were gone. I just bought an ebay aux/usb port for when I install my new radio.

Thinking about cutting a hole in the armrest or the ashtray under the radio.

Wondering if anyone has pics or words of advice from their custom install.

I had the lighter swapped out for a dual USB/HDMI port when I replaced the stock base head unit. The Pioneer AVH 4200 NEX Head Unit that was installed also has a second USB input which was routed to the center console. Many options depending on what your needs are. Good luck.

Wire it into the cig lighter hole in the center console. Not sure who would ever use one in the center console but it looks factory, it will charge your phone from the headunit and youíll easily be able to tuck the wires away. If you got a headunit with CarPlay thatís even better since you wonít even need to touch your phone once itís plugged in

You could change out the rear console to a 2011-13 model that has the usb and aux built into it and just wire it up to your headunit.

Don't overthink this. If all you want is a way to charge things I got this FREE direct from China. You can get them at Amazon for about $7.

I have a charger. I prefer my music to be on a separate ipod rather than my phone, so i need to plug it in via USB. Plus, music over bluetooth cuts a lot of sound, so i prefer plugging in.

What head unit are you getting? Are you sure it doesn't have a USB port on the front? My '08 came with a JVC and it has a little tab that lifts up to reveal a USB. No 3.5mm though. But the unit is several years old and not top of the line.

You can buy a panel mount USB cable that will interface directly to most modern stereo head units. The panel mount connector simple requires a hole to be drilled. In my case I did it on a C4 console, but on most any console you can find a good spot either on the side, top, or inside the glovebox.

I ran a USB port and another charging port for a tablet or phone from the back of my Pioneer.
