When I first saw the thread title I thought it was gonna be about pictures or old videos going back 50 years in time, to some old hotrods (Corvettes?) that had glasspacks.

TBH, I didn't even think they still made glasspacks, what with all the catalytic converters, sensors, yadda yadda all over the exhaust system and into the computer system.

Not really. I guess I should have known. Kinda sad.

Anyway, I was watching "American Pickers" on TV and a car they were looking at had glasspacks. I had heard the term before, but wasn't really sure what exactly they were. Did some online research and found that they can be an inexpensive, fast and easily reversible way to experiment with exhaust sound. I even found some videos of people who had installed them on their C6. I thought I would try to get more info from the members here. That was obviously a poor choice on my part. Oh well...live and learn.

I had glasspacks on my first car, a '61 Corvair. They were from J.C. Whitney and I believe the total cost was about $9.95. (I worked part-time for a farmer for 75¢ per hour, earning $15-18 per week, cash, depending on how many hours I worked. So the ten bucks for the exhaust, plus shipping, pretty much wiped out one week's pay ).

Being a rear engine, flat-6, the entire DUAL (vs. stock single) exhaust system had only two parts: a short pipe with muffler, one assembly per side. The placebo effect on horsepower gains was amazing. I'm sure it gained 20-30 HP.

I get it guys. No offense taken. It's all in good fun.

I actually thought the videos I saw with Cherry Bomb glasspacks installed on a C6 sounded pretty good. Maybe my ear for exhaust sound is as bad as my palette for fine wine (I always have liked Boones Farm).

I had a set of 36" glasspacks on my 1st car, which was a 1972 Mustang with a 302. It sounded great; they provided a very deep, not-too-loud sound with no drone.

There is another choice besides glasspack to consider - a company called Classic Chambered. I considered trying one on my Avalanche but ultimately did not.

I like the idea of picking up a cheap midpipe and trying them out, if I was so inclined to give it a try. I am perfectly happy since I converted to a stock NPP system.

I am sure they moaned and droned, yet I don't recall specifics.

I imagine he OP is considering removing the OEM mufflers and then installing straight glass packs into this location. Plus perhaps working with a budget.

I am swayed to recommend to look toward some other mufflers (Borla, Billy Boat and all the names) that are race track products.

No mention of whether the OP car already has Long Tubes, Cats, X pipe, NPP variable mufflers.

FWIW I would not do glass packs and instead install header first with what ever mufflers are currently on the car and then evaluate tone/ sound.

Best of luck in your decision.
Hit the nail on the head.

Exhausts sound VERY different depending on if you have shorties, longtubes, cats, x-pipe, h-pipe, a cam, etc. Also, there are different types of glasspack/bullet mufflers as well. There are old school louvered glasspacks like the old days, which effectively reduce the exh diameter and quiet down a bit, and there are modern perforated core bullets which are straight through and cut a bit of drone and change the tone, but do not do much for the actual sound level of the exhaust.

On a bone stock car with nothing else done, just replacing the mufflers with test pipes will sound great since it is basically an "always on" NPP. Bullets instead of test pipes will take a bit of the higher RPM bark out of that setup, but won't make a huge difference in the grand scheme of things.

Once you add longtubes or remove the cats though, it will sound terrible like that...very loud and TONS of drone. If you plan on future mods, especially if you live in a no-emissions state and don't mind removing cats, a proper exhaust system is the way to go unless you enjoy tons of highway drone and not being able to have a conversation in your car.

The real answer to this questions is, what are your current mods, and what do you plan for the future?

I had a 1964 Corvair Monza Spyder. Stock mufflers, but being a Spyder, it was turbocharged. Fun.

In 1968 I bought a brand new Camaro, red, 327. Put glass packs on it. People would stop me all the time wanting to know about the sound. It kept up with Z28s. Met my wife in it. Loved that car. Still love that wife.

I would be interested to hear what a C-6 would sound like with them....LOL. Do they even still make them ? I would think that just slapping them on one of these new fangeld hot rods wouldn't be just a matter of cutting off the old and bolting up the new..... And if mem serves the more silent Thrush were called "Hush Thrush", and not "Thrush Hush"....

Default Alternative to Cherry bombs.....

I had cherry Bombs on my '69 Camaro when I was in high school (late 1970's), but got tired of the noise, and it just didn't sound crisp when you hit the throttle, so I put on Turbo mufflers. Sounded awesome !!! To this day, have not heard a sweeter combination of fairly quiet when your going slower, but when you punched it, it just had a great clean , sharp sound. They were shorter than a stock muffler, but still oval when you look at it from the end.
Hope this helps.

I'm actually running the mid-size Classic Chambered mufflers 2.5" In/Out on my 2005 Corvette for the past year. I hear a little drone when I rev up to 2000 rpm. Below or above that I don't hear any drone.

I knew a guy that put a pair on his motorcycle.

Sounded good and much, much cheaper than slip-ons. Not saying his bike looked so good. Classic Italian sportbike with Cherry Bombs.

Sounds like you are trying to save $$, which I understand. DON'T go the cherry bomb route...if you just want more rumble, check this out...

Go to post #7, and read from there on. A stock muffler mod which does not look too difficult to do, and which those who have done it are quite happy.
