Mileage discrepancy on a car
Returning from Florida, we came across a 2008 coupe. Car looks really clean and well cared for. Spoke with the salesperson. Car odometer shows 58,000 miles. Checked Auto Check and Car Fax. Both show the last recorded mileage as 60,000 in 2014. Dealer claims someone screwed up when original owner sold car. Car shows registration every year since then, but, no mileage data. Anyone who buys the car will trigger a Odometer error on CarFax and AutoCheck.
How will that affect the car's value down the road? Car is priced as a 58k mile 3LT coupe, but, I am concerned if it is really worth it if it takes a big financial hit when the odo error shows up.
Any opinions?

Computer scan
The complex, expensive computer scanners used at new car dealership service departments can go deep inside the car's computer modules and provide the correct mileage of a vehicle assuming that the original computer module has not been replaced or re-set.....as was explained to me. I could be wrong, and if so those with more knowledge will most likely post to your question. Personally, I wouldn't be overly concerned at this point with this car, as the discrepancy isn't that much and a new owner may have estimated the mileage when changing over a title at a MVD or Third-Party office if they were not positive of the actual mileage on the car at that time.

Car shows 60K in 2014, ODO shows 58K now. Maybe a 2K mistake but I'd be asking where the car's been for the last 4 years, was it being driven and if so how many miles. THAT would be my concern, car could have 70-80K miles on it. Good luck...

I agree with everything that has been posted so far, I would definitely check it out. I remember when I had my C5 and went in for an oil change and they entered into the system my mileage in Kilometers instead of miles, it took some time to get the correct mileage reflected in their database. So, it could be a something as simple as that. Good luck!

If the past service and registrations support the 58k number then I would not worry too much about it. Many times people estimate (incorrectly) what their mileage is when performing a registration.
The happened on my son's car where the previous owner's wife had to do the registration. She was not as familiar with the car and estimated the mileage without understanding the consequences.

"In honor of jpee"
Usually it's just a minor mistake that I've seen on CarFax and it's within months of happening. This is far too much elapsed time. Something is wrong IMO.

With so many Corvettes for sale why bother with this one?? It would bother me and it obviously bothers you. Enjoy the Corvette experience. Don't buy something that starts off with a negative. I would AVOID this one even if a simple clerical error.

I had the miles vs kilometers mistake made with the 99 convertible I used to own. CARFAX eventually made an entry that explained the mileage mistake.

Mileage is stored in two places in the car.
In the BCM and in the Dash gauge module.
Sounds like one of the two was replace, and when the module was firmware flashed, was not done correctly. Hence in SPS, there is a option to just flash the module, and then a option to replace and flash the module instead. In the later, this is were the correct mileage from the other module is used, to flash in the correct mileage.
Now say that the car is flood car, where both modules were destroyed, and the firmware flash can not pull the mileage from the other module as it being flashed in to the other, then the mileage has to be entered manually into the firmware before the flash instead.
As for what carfax states, those mileage numbers are screwed up all the time by even the wrong mileage put in the work order, so to really get resolution, dealer can check both the BCM against the dash gauge module to see if the mileages are the same or not (dates of the flashes as well), and tell if the mileage is correct for the car.
Hence this is the reason that the mileage is stored in two different areas, and firmware flashes to the car are stored by date as well.

That may be. I am not that familiar with the process. The big concern is the fact that as soon as the car is registered, the new mileage will show up on AC and CF and most likely will post an odometer error.
As previous respondents have mentioned, there are more than enough cars around to avoid this hassle. Thanks.

I would not buy it from you next year as a 62K car.
