Default Wheel Spacers, Got Educated Today

I've been wanting to space out the wheels on my GS to fill out the fenders more. Nothing too crazy, just 1/2". But I wasn't comfortable using extended lug nuts so I took the four hubs off and replaced the studs with longer ones from ARP. Lots of work, but got it done.... So I added the spacers, put everything back together, and immediately noticed a vibration in the steering wheel starting at 70. I assumed (correctly) that the wheels were not center up correctly and I could not get them centered without the pilot The spacers are not hub centric. No such thing for a 1/2" spacer.

So.... I either need to scrap the whole idea .... or make sleeves that press inside the hub bore and extend the pilot dia out another 1/2". Has anyone ever dealt with this? Can you buy an adaptor that extends the pilot diameter? I think I've wasted a LOT of time unless I can come up with a good solution.

They exist for sure. Search for 5x4.75 hubcentric spacers on ebay. You will see a lot at 12mm and 15mm thick.

I'm on mobile, but will try to post a couple links.

Hope you are right, but I don't see how it's possible since the length of the pilot hub is approx 1/2".

Very true. I don't mind doing the work to get the look I want. But it sucks when you go to a LOT of work for NO gain.

So I ordered 12mm hubcentric spacers thanks to Mr. 'Doomi'. (The ones I didn't think existed! Ha!). Now I'm looking for a pair of 18 mm ones for my C5 so I can clear the Wilwood brakes. I'm having trouble finding that width. If any one knows of a source, please let me know! A big 'thank-you' in advance!!

Wheel spacers make me a bit nervous.....I had a buddy who used them on his '65 retro Vette. He used GM spacers, which he has used for years and last year he had one fail. Luckily no real damage was done, other than he had to flatbed the car home.....I have always pondered the extra stress on the rear axle components when you push the wheels out farther.

You will need to check torque on spacers frequently. Don't get lazy with this or it can be costly.
Check after first 50 miles for sure!

I think the closest you're going to find are the 15mm spacers I posted on the last one or if you don't mind going over the 20mm i posted below. Or a 12mm stacked on top of a 5mm, but I wouldn't consider that as an option personally.

I ran 1.5" spacers for several months with no issues when I switched to a wide body. Honestly with spacers this narrow I'd have zero concern as long as you check that they are torqued occasionally.

Thanks again for the help. For those concerned about failure, - these are not bolt-on spacers. I replaced the standard studs with longer ARP high quality racing studs. These spacers will be nothing more than a 'sandwich' with ARP studs holding everything together.

Many thanks to doomi for hooking me up with the 1/2"
HUB-CENTRIC spacers!! Got em on and no vibration issues. Love the look, especially in the rear. Tires are now flush with the fenders.

Spacers are OK for certain applications.....mild hot rod.....street boat....etc. But running spacers on one of these high performance applications that not only go fast in a straight line, but also handle like a carving knife just seems a little iffy.......good luck.

Surely we all remember back in the day the "reversed chrome rims", had to replace wheel bearings at an alarming rate because of the extra stress I assume.

I replaced wheel studs with ARP high strength ones. They are 3/4" longer than stock and much higher tensil strength. These are not 'bolt-on' spacers. They are sandwiched between the hub and the rim with racing studs. I'm not the slightest bit worried.

I had ebay hub centric spacers on my suv DD, summer wheels, and had steering wheel vibration at highway speeds. During the winter I would change my wheels and remove spacers. Long story short, I haven't put the summer wheels and spacers back on my DD in two years. My DD drives like new without them, not worth the trouble.

I measured all four tire/wheel combos for runout after install. They all measured good, - no vibration. PS: I also indicated in the spacers to make sure the hub on them was running true to the wheel centerline.
