Default Sport mode question

The vette is amazingly fast off the line and it starts in 2nd gear. Wondering why the auto trans doesn't start in first. Is the only reason for first better acceleration? Has it any other value? Economy? I can burn rubber even if not in sport mode. Wonder what the thinking behind first was. Not everyone uses that, i bet.. Do other muscle cars start in 2nd??

Press your paddle shifter and it will go in first.

The dial on the center console that is labeled tour and sport, is just for the F55 suspension module ride alone.
So the tour/sport dial is used to firm the damping of the shock only.

The TC button forward and to the left of the suspension dial, will control Active handling and Traction control isntead.

The TC button on the first push will turn traction control off, another push of it will put the car into comp mode.

In comp mode on the second button push, the traction control is turned off, and now active handling will allow the back end to step out farther before AH kicks into to try to bring the back end into check. I say try, since if you have the back end out to quickly in say a snap hook turn, it not going to react fast enough, and your going to end up in a wreck condition isntead.

A third button push will turn all the nanies back on again (AH back to full on, TC back on again).

If you push the TC button down and hold it down for 5 seconds, it will turn off both TC and AH.

With Active handling off, the back end can now come around to swap ends with the front end, and AH will not kick in to save you. You run the car in off off mode, and you getting be able to skate a car on ice under control, since the Vet is going to try to kill you every chance it gets.

A button push of the TC again from all off mode, will turn the all the nannies back on.

If you want the DIC as you push the TC button, it will tell you what mode you are in.

As for the TC when on, it will allow the tires to initially spin, but will kick in to stop the wheel spin isntead. If you can roast the tires with TC on, then someone tweaked some setting in the tune to deactivate TC instead.

My question would be..why is your transmission starting in 2nd gear? Might want to read the owners manual. It should start in 1st gear under normal conditions, unless you have it in 2nd in sport mode.

None of this relates to the A6 transmission starting in 2nd gear in S (sport) mode after paddles have been activated.

Being stick guy from the old days, it will take practice to use the paddles effectively -- especially coming out of 1st because it happens quickly. I can work a clutch and stick subconsciously, but the paddles were a new learning experience and it takes a conscious effort (for me anyway). I have not spent enough time beating my car for paddle-shifting to become subconscious.

Nobody really seems to know for sure what happens when (from past discussions on this), but in auto I believe it does start out in 2nd. With paddles active it starts in 1st (unless you let it downshift by itself . . . ?? )

Don't know for sure, don't care. I'm just your average old duffer cruising around in a bone-stock C6.

The OP hasn't updated his profile, but I'd guess he now has a '06-'09. The A6 in D (drive) always starts out in 1st. It also starts out in 1st when S (sport) is selected. However, once the paddles have been used, it only downshifts automatically to 2nd. If you desire 1st, you must manually use the paddles to do so. I suspect the original reason had something to do with gov't economy or emission requirements.

IIRC the '10's had a change in how the paddles worked.

For maximum acceleration from a dead stop at the track, my procedure
('08) is to shift to S and hit the paddles, which downshifts to 1st. Then paddle to 2nd for the burnout. Then back to D to get out of paddle mode and then to S, so it'll start in 1st. The shift points are approximately 300 rpm higher in S than D.

99% of my driving is in D. I only use the paddles on the street in either heavy stop & go traffic or going up hills to lock the converter to avoid overheating.

My car is a 2010 base coupe. I guess i have to study the manual some more. Obviously first read wasnt clear to me. What i fear most is losing control like i see vettes do pretty easily on youtube .

Then leave the traction control and stability control on. I find I can slide mine around nicely with them still activated. No ludicrous drifting type slides but fun just letting the back step out enough to steer with the throttle slides.

Really don't have answer to your original question. My question has always been, why buy an automatic?

Cuz I've been shifting for 60 years and I got tired of it.

FWIW I actually went out yesterday and tuned all nannies off just to see what goes
Standing start, stab the pedal and wheels spin, not excessively but a pretty good amount
Went to a big empty parking lot to see about the "donut" thing, yep, it does that, scared the poop out of me But was rather fun
All done with that now but wanted to try it.
