Default Top rattles

Do I really need to buy the little $70.00 bottle of GM weather strip lube to quite my top rattles and creeks? Some say it's the only thing that works.

My C5 (see avatar) had top rattle issues. I cleaned the seals with 3M adhesive trim cement remover and gave them a good coat of silicon rubber preservative. I used Griot's and that fixed my issues. I should mention that I never removed the top so I can't say how it would hold up if your top was off routinely. Good luck

C clips next to the rollers and shrink wrap on the pins. My top has been silent for four years and it took about 15 minutes and cost less than $10.00 at Home Depot. Spreading grease on you weatherstripping is filthy and is a short term fix if you ever remove your roof.

Do you have any pictures of your solution?

A second rubber O-ring permanently fixed mine.

I did the O rings as well.

Sorry. No pictures but there are dozens of threads on here showing all three simple and cheap fixes. Those posts are how I learned what to do

Trunk Monkey send me some new updated (little bigger) pins and solved the problem a few yrs ago. He said after all these yrs GM finally made the pins a pinch larger and solved most of the problems.
Sure did mine!
The o rings work, some use plastic tape, etc.
Now I really solved the problem, got a Vert!
Good luck, try the new pins 1st.

Default 303 rubber seal protectant

2010 GS that for years had top noise driving me nuts. Month ago I removed the top, wiped and washed all the lubricant I had previously tried with no real help , off the rubber. I checked tightness of all the pins that were fine. I found after a search a 303 rubber seal protectant , water based like the GM for less than $10 sold by Walmart online and applied it, letting it dry before replacing the top. I’m amazed so far. Absolutely no noise after years of aggravation. It’s been warming up here in Texas but so far no problems when leaving the garage into the heat which used to get it making major creaking. Give it a shot.

I just serviced the targa top on our 2011 GS that had started 'rattling'. One pin was loose, so be sure you tighten all four, but the seals were dry. I used Super Lube synthetic grease as suggested by others here on CF. It's $7 at Harbor Freight, but take a 20% off coupon and that'll make it even cheaper. You can buy it other places as well for $8-10. Plus, you can use it on all of the other seals on your 'Vette, which I did, as well as on all of your other vehicles and things around the house.

Let me caution you though. It takes very little of this stuff to treat the seals. An amount the size of a green pea will do the entire seal across the halo. Same for the top of the windshield. A little goes a long way. Start with very little until you get the feel for it. It will spread a long way. Your seals will not be 'goopy' if you do it right. If they are 'goopy' you have used too much. Just take a clean cloth and gently wipe off the excess. If they are dry you will have to do more than one application. I just used my forefinger to spread it on and then my thumb to massage it into the seals.

O-rings, shrink wrap on the pins and Synthetic grease on the seals. Use a little grease. If you can see a film on the seal you used WAY to much. Should not be messy or greasy. Did this because the top was noisey and I was gonna do a 4,800 mile road trip. Worth the effort. Not a creak and there are some pretty bumpy roads between San Diego and Charlotte NC. It worked perfectly and still does.

I did the O-rings and E-clips as well. Super easy. Took like 30 seconds. Lowe's had them for like $3 all in.

Here's the thread I bookmarked with photos:

You do not need to buy the expensive stuff to quiet your rattle Go to NAPA and buy a tube of Sil-Glyde. It is a rubber lubricant and you can use it on your weatherstrips or any other rubber pieces you have Do as mentioned above and Robert lightly on all the weatherstrips around the roof and then put some on the receptacles in the halo where the metal pins insert. That’s all it takes

Re: EVRose pic ~ I just added this extra rubber o-ring too, great.
However, I see there's no plastic (polyethylene?) washer behind the front pin pictured, which is standard with mine.

I re-torqued my top pins front and back (16 ft lbs), noticed the back did not have a washer, so installed a thin one there too. Brilliant, absolutely silent.

Mine (05) never had any plastic washer behind the pin.

He has the new latches which do not have the round rollers which came out in 2008.
