Default A C6 visit to Clingman's Dome

What an incredible weather day in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park yesterday. After nearly two weeks of rain it finally cleared up a few days ago We brought a picnic lunch and took some photos. The elevation at the tower is approx 6000'. Temps ranged from 56 in the morning to 81 in the afternoon at the lower elevations. We live just an hour away from the national park, and Blue Ridge Pkwy which we took on the way home. For those coming to this area all I can suggest as a tip is to avoid the weekends if possible, and that includes the nearby Tail of the Dragon. Just too busy during the peak season of May to October. We did see a few C7 Corvettes during the day and I remembered to do the wave to one of them. He waved back!

A beautiful spot! I read the walk path to the top is closed, repaving?

Great pics, thanks!

I was there last year and had a blast. What a beautiful place with amazing scenery. I'm very jealous right now sitting behind the desk typing this. The next chance I get I'm going to get back out there.

It's all finished now, including the road and parking lot.

Yes, huffing & puffing is expected. Many benches (human pullouts ) along the half mile climb.

We retired here in 2002 after spending our entire lives in the Tampa area. No regrets except for Jan/Feb when it's no fun here most of the time.

I've been there about 5 or 6 times. I drive up from Orlando, and hope to move to the area someday.

I guess the grass is always greener somewhere else! We've been snowbirds coming down to FL from NY for the last 9 years, and finally sold the house in upstate NY last August, and moved to the Tampa area. I've had enough snow and cold to last me a lifetime, and love it here. Just make sure you retire before moving here though! This is definitely convertible country, and great back country roads!

Did the Dragon two years ago on my 67 birthday and it was mid-week and great! Went to parking lot of Clingmans Dome, got out of my C6 and nearly got blown off by the wind! It was 80 something when I started up and 40 something in the parking lot. All the bathrooms had lines of people waiting to change from shorts and Tee shirts to heavier clothing. Be prepared for a temp change AND fantastic scenery!

We were there the day after an early snowfall. Roads were clear.

Those early snowfalls in the park are a treat. Autumn colors with snow on them. Sweet photo!
