Am I to presume that the oil pressure sensor is shot? I did a search and could not find what is involved in changing out the part?

I haven't done one and sincerely hope that I don't have to do mine. Here are a couple of pictures from someone who had to do it on their C5 and they thought it was easier to do it with the intake manifold off the engine. The pictures give you an idea of what they look like and where they are located.

Getting my carbon fiber engine cover on and off is a bear to do so I can’t take a pic for you. I’m not sure you can see it with plastic engine covers on but if you take a flashlight and shine directly behind the intake manifold at the firewall that’s it. It can be changed with a swivel rachet/socket. Not easily but it can be done. Look for the sensor from the driver side.

I had not looked into this much further until recently the sensor starting acting up (initially it had gone "dead") - for the past one week it now intermittently goes from a over the max pressure to a very low pressure and because of that the DIC gives me the ding ding ding sound and a damn message on the HUD as well - it is getting very irritating driving the car.

Went to a local independent shop asked the guy how much and he quoted me about 3 hours labour. I asked in the interim if he could use a scanner to shut it off or can he just unplug the wire to the sensor and he said "no" to both.

I tried to take a look today to see if I could at least temporarily disconnect the wire but I am not sure which one is the sensor (I am not too good with cars, can only do oil changes)?

Here are a couple of pics, I was hoping someone could put a circle around it if I was able to capture it in the pictures.

This sounds like when mine failed. I think this is fairly common scenario, and there is some talk about a brass replacement being better than OEM?

It is located behind the intake manifold, under the windshield cowl . On drivers side.

Not much room to work in. Some have been able to replace unit without removing intake manifold or cutting a hole in the fiberglass cowl support.
I ended up cutting a hole.
You must use a special thin walled socket made for sending units, reg socket won't fit....hits the intake manifold.

Do you think that there is enough room for me to stick my hand in and disconnect the connector (I presume there is a wire going to it and there is a connector)?

Yes. I did mine. It is a one sided clip, so pull out at the bottom of the clip and it comes off.
Something like this.

No, but it's not difficult, from what I understand.

I would say it’s difficult at best to remove and reinstall. The only way I see to do it is using a swivel ratchet to be able to access once the wire connector is removed.

Yep, when the oil pressure sensor fails, it will give a reading of 80 lbs all the time (ohm reading through it).

The fact that your getting a XXX reading, means that the problem is in the wiring connector for the sensor, or the wires of the oil pressure sensor up line, and not the oil sensor isntead.

This is something new that I am hearing - so then even if I disconnect the wire from the sensor then I will have the warming chime? Also, are you sure, sometimes the reading goes from a very low reading to 892 kpa?

When mine malfunctioned it would bounce between actual reading to XXX

Sensor is easy enough to replace with just a flex extension, and a mirror or flex head camera for smart phone, so you can see what your doing blindly with your hands under the rear cowling.

Plus the phone endoscope for the phone comes in handy for other engine projects as well.

C5, but you get the idea since it located in the same location.
