was my fault for merging into ongoing traffic. his damage wasnt bad so we decided not to call insurance and we are discussing how much i will pay him for his front end minor damage. for mine i went to the dealer for a quote and they told me 3000 before taxes, since the panel is very rare the guy said. is this fair?
1) Is the door jamb damaged? The jamb panel is bonded to the frame and is a big deal to replace.
2) Most of the cost is in the painting and prep. How good of a paint job do you require? If you scare up a used panel, it's not going to match. But it might be close enough. If you want an invisible match, you're not going to get away without blending into adjacent panels.
Assuming the jamb is okay, the industry-standard method for that repair would be to sand the clearcoat on the entire door, rear hatch, and rear fascia. The new fender would be painted and blended into those three adjacent panels. I think you could get away with ignoring the halo and the sills. All four panels would get clear coated in their entirety.
This involves removing trim, roping the rear glass, etc. In other words, it's a lot of hours.

I agree with Torquetube. I've done paint and body for a long time and got to say matching and blending can be a PITA . Could turn into mucho hours.

It would be interesting to know specifically what you were going to get for the $3000. For example, did they indicate that the door jamb was damaged? Were they going to use a brand new panel? How many hours of painting and prep work was in the quote? You should take it someplace else and get a detailed quote for comparison purposes. The more info you have, the more informed a decision you can make, obviously.

I agree with tourqy and fats...
Here's the OP's car:
Here's an "open" shot of a different car:
The OP's door looks like it doesn't align right, it looks like the body panel is ripped into the door jamb. Plus whatever else might be damaged.

OK, I play mr.persophine.
No panels are "more rare" than any other." When damaged or replaced, they all need to be painted, and blended to match, and a good shop will do this.
MY question is why won't your let your insurance take care of both his and yours?

A brand new quarter panel is $588, but as others have said you can pick up a used one for a couple hundred. Painting should only be a couple hundred as well. My brand new B92 hood cost $400 to paint, was painted off the car & is a perfect match - no need for any other panels to be sanded, blended, etc. now if your paint is not in that good of shape, that might be necessary, but still no where near $3,000.

I bought both rear panels in silver with no scratches for $100. Since the OP failed to fill out his profile, I can't give a recommendation of where to go to find more. I know three sources, Oh well.
