replacing the stock nav/stereo unit
I could probably spend a hour trying search for an answer, but at my age I have less patience. thinking about replacing the stock unit in my 07 coupe, with something that is more modern and up to date. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Updated my C5 to a Kenwood, very happy with it.
Look on Crutchfields, it all depends on your checklist.

+1 for Crutchfield. I grabbed a Blaupunkt unit that had dual camera inputs & usb mp3 playing capability. Those were the only 2 biggies on my list.
Buy the wiring kit, pay the $30 to have them connectorize it. It's worth it

I just swapped out the factory Bose with nav in my '09 for a Kenwood Dnx574s , what a difference. Much better sound with modern connections and another plus 1 for Crutchfield

I recently posted an extensive summary of my C6 stereo install that should help you out. Not sure how to provide a direct link but should be easy to find on the electronics forum

Crutchfield is great for info, not really for shopping. A lot of guys buy from there.
I bought Pioneer 8200 NEX from Newegg.com for barely $500 new. This model has everything you'll need (incl Nav). Everywhere else it was for $799 - $1200.
...Just saying...

I agree. Crutchfield usually carries the latest models for close to retail price. Don't get me wrong, Crutchfield is great for a lot of audio stuff, but when it comes to deals on head units you can usually do better shopping around. They are unmatched in customer service though and their return policy is tops also.

I just looked it up and its the same exact dimensions as the 8200nex. I'm not sure why Crutchfield claims it doesn't fit but if you were serious about considering it, I would call Crutchfield and see what the rep says. I installed the 8200 without any issues. I think all head units by the major brands, try to stay within a certain specific size as far as dimensions go just to make the fit more universal.

How compatible are modern head units with the dinosaur C6 navigation system infrastructure?
I know volume can be controlled through the wheel on some aftermarket head units, but what about the 1-6 buttons and the push to talk button? Do these lose their functionality?
Can you program the steering wheel buttons to call up google assistant or siri?
