Interesting. But would be more helpful if you said where dealer located AND the name (since you're never going back). Thanks. Good luck.

If you have the knowledge of how to diagnose the problem and fix it, why go to the dealer to begin with for a non-warranty problem. It would be interesting to check back next month to see if the "fix" holds.

Ah, the Far North! I went to a great Corvette show in Ontario a year ago. Mike Jackson Chevrolet's annual show.

I'm sure there are more dealers, but you may have to "go across the bridge to a dealer in Dearborn." j/k, of course, since it's a ride to get there.

Are you referring to the harmonic balancer bolt. I think that it is a torque to yield bolt which means it is a one time use and no re-tightening it.
Did you check to see if the rubber is separating from the pulley? If your harmonic balancer is on the way out, you may hear a squeaking noise, and the pulley will have a wobble to it due to the rubber separating from the pulley which will cause belt slippage. A friend had his C6 Corvette harmonic balancer pulley replaced because it was displaying the problems above. Cost was about $1500 a few years ago.

What year is your car?

You should post this in the Canadian section as well. It's good to know who can and cannot be trusted up here when going to dealerships for repairs!

Was the price in Canadian dollars? Just curious since I had the notoriously wonky vibration damper on my C5 replaced a year ago, along with a bunch of other things I'd put off doing myself, and the entire bill was less than yours in US dollars. That wa at a dealer who sells and services quite a few Vettes (for my area) and seemed to know what they were doing.

Id be pulling that apart and inspecting the crank and the inside of the balancer. You may have damaged either one or both.

I've seen many threads on here and many forums with Chevrolet's harmonic balancer issues. What is your mileage, 60,000 or so?

Good luck with the repair! HBs fails are quite common. I would research about replacing it with ATI or something just in case you need to replace. it. If the GM dealer is charging you MSRP for the parts then that could explain the high price. I always try to negotiate. Dealer can't tell me that he needs to double the price what certain dealers will sell you the part for just to make money. Labor prices you can't do crap about unless you know someone that can do the work.

Correct me if I'm wrong but a loose HB bolt will not impact charging...unless the HB has worn the snout down to where it slips.

with the bolt loose the hb could be spinning on the crank snout.that is what spins your alternator so it can impact charging with alternator not getting up to speed to keep battery charged.hb spinning on crank snout will destroy the crank

If the HB was spinning on the crank it would not have stayed on. Come on.

when their spinning they stay on till they start wearing the crank snout.then all kinds of bad things happen.the belt comes off and hb can go backwards into timing cover or forwards into steering rack.at that point you just need to remove engine and replace crank and everything else that has been damaged.why do you think we pin the hb to the crank?
