Most of those cases are aluminum or blend thereof. Either way, they are very reactive to acid like that found in a good chrome wheel cleaner. Spray some on, scrub it a bit with a bristled brush and try not to let it set on there for too long. If it does, it starts to turn the metal more white. Just keep a bucket of soapy water nearby and use that once you're done as that will neutralize the acid in the cleaner. I used to use hydrochloric acid all the time as a detailist back in high school and college. That stuff is magic on chrome and great on aluminum, if you know what you're doing.

Another alternative is to carefully tape off and lightly spray it.....I have done this successfully with other cars for show/concours detailing (see my '87 engine...a 2006 photo). The key is being very careful in your tape off and not going crazy with the spraying. Tape off small stuff so you avoid a "all one color" effect. A light dust coat is all that you want so as not to detract from the natural finish of the metal. One paint I had used in the past was sold via an aftermarket Corvette catalog firm and made specifically to "refresh" the natural color of earlier C4 valve covers (these would turn brown over time). The color and finish achieved was perfect for the detailing needs you describe...but, I am sure there are many others sold that would fit the bill too. Try the gentle cleaning route first, then if still not satisfactory you might consider the paint. Oh...if you do get it cleaned and looking satisfactory without painting, you might try a coating of satin finish clear on to maintain a new look finish. Cans of this are also sold for such use.
